Painting Questions...

So, we are going to paint the nursery this weekend - and we have never painted a room before.  Any helpful hints?  (we are just going with one color, nothing fancy).  Also, reading a guide online it mentioned sanding the walls, do we really need to do this?  Our house is pretty new and the walls just have a flat paint on them with a little texture....

A follow on question, I really would like to do some navy blue shelves etc in the nursery.  I found land of nod has some, but wondered what I would need to do if I just bought something wood color or painted white and wanted to repaint it?

  • Use a roller for most of the painting and an edger or thin paint brush for the edges.  Tape off any woodwork to protect it.  Keep a wet rag on hand for any drips.

As for sanding, I've never heard this.  I would never do it since yo

  • I wouldn't worry about sanding the walls as long as they look fine to you.  My best piece of advice is to take the time to tape the ceiling and baseboards.  It's time consuming and annoying but it'll save you time and frustration in the

  • Sanding the walls has to do with fresh drywall mud. Unless you have brand new construction or patching a whole in a wall you won't need to sand.

I would go with roller (ask where your getting the paint for the best kind, there are different thi

  • If you plan on paiting right over the outlet covers make sure you turn the breaker off to the room FIRST. I made the mistake of assuming the breaker was off while paitining the garage a while back and couldn't feel my arm for a solid 20 mins.

  • I must be the only one who is incompetent when it comes to taping.  Every time I try it (take my time, spend forever trying to get it just right, make sure it is pushed down well), the paint always bleeds through or the line is somehow not straigh

  • I've never sanded before painting, unless some light spackling work was needed.  And only the spackled area was sanded then, not the whole wall.  Sounds like you should be good to go ahead and paint.

  • I recommend using quality tools - I love Purdy brand brushes, I swear they make all the difference.  I typically use a small angled brush to edge, instead of taping - depends on how steady your hand is.  (I have problems with paint bleeding u
