daycare - need your thoughts (long)

We take Payton to an in-home daycare 4 days a week, and DH has her on Mondays.  It seems whenever the daycare lady takes time off, it's on any other day than Mondays and we get screwed because we have to pay her for that time off.

During the week of Christmas, she's taking the 24,25,26th off... leaving us with only the 23rd and paying her for all 4 days.

During NYs week, she's taking the 31st and 1st off... leaving us with only 2 days and paying for 4.

I suggested this morning that we bring Payton this next Monday (for the whole week) and she said that's fine IF I keep her home Jan 2nd.

Ugh.  All the other kids she watches are full time and if we were full time, I wouldn't feel this way.  But we're not.  Would you say something?  How would you approach it?

Thanks

  • We are in the same position, I don't mind because we are only 3 days a week with my schedule. But then again for us during the winter season time we are hit hard with the vacation days but in spring people who take their kid on Mondays get hard for the holidays like presidents day or any other bank holiday.  I would figure out how much you like your day care and weigh out the options... wqe

  • I think it's definitely frustrating, but if you really like her and the care she gives for Payton otherwise, I probably wouldn't say anything. Next year the vacation time will fall on different days, so it probably won't be as much of an issue then. Maybe it would help to think of it as any other job where you'd get paid vacation?

  • I hear you - and I don't have any good advice.  It seems like when you're part time like that, you should just have to pay for the days you're there....

But, I probably wouldn't say anything myself :|

  • That's hard.  Most places are pretty stiff on this.  If one of our closed days falls on a nonscheduled day though I do allow them to come on a different day.  That sucks she won't allow it!  :(
  • I don't really have any advice, but was wondering if she gave you her "closed" schedule when you initially signed up with her, or just recently?  And I agree that it doesn't really make since that P can't go next Monday when you are paying for more days closed then open.

  • Ugh frustrating.  I wish I had some advice. I know you have had a hard time finding a daycare you and P love.  :(  Are you paying any special rate for part time?
