How much is your LO eating?

DH and I were talking today about this just because I happened to be giving DS a snack.  He's still nursing some but I'm slowly weaning him and moving to cow's milk in addition to meals (I give him water with meals).  He's a very good eater, not picky, and is great with finger foods - he gets quite annoyed if he can't feed himself!

Anyway, I looked online to see about the recommended amount of food for a young toddler and was kind of surprised -  WebMD and a few other places suggest 3 servings of grain (listing 1 slice of bread as a serving), 1 cup of vegetables, 1 cup of fruit, 2 servings of protein, plus 2 servings of dairy.  At this point, DS definitely gets 2 servings of dairy, but I don't think he comes anywhere close to any of the rest of these.  This just seems like a LOT of food for him - I feel like he'd be eating all day if I fed him all of this!

We have a dr appt on Tuesday so I'm going to ask then but in the meantime I figured I'd ask here.  Does this seem like a lot to anyone else, or is this about what your LO eats?

ETA:  I know that WebMD is unlikely to be the absolute BEST source of information for this, but I was completely unsuccessful in finding recommendations from the AAP (and their guidelines are the ones I've mostly followed thus far) - if anyone has those, I'd love to have that info!

Re: How much is your LO eating?

  • I was at the pedi for LO's check up this week, and was also concerned as this week he has gone from the awesome baby who will eat anything (even stuff I don't eat - like rutabaga!) to the toddler who seems insistent on surviving on meatballs, cheese, a

  • That sounds like a ton of food to me, holy cow! DS eats 3 meals a day and sometimes an afternoon snack, and still nurses a lot. I'd say he eats about 1/2 c of whatever food at each meal, maybe more like 1 c at dinner. He usually gets oatmeal, fruit, or a
  • I wouldn't worry about what WebMD says.

At this stage there are quite a few variables that affect what and how much a child will eat. I wouldn't worry much unless he doesn't seem to have any appetite.

  • Thanks everyone.  I'm glad to know it doesn't seem like I'm starving DS lol!  He nurses first thing in the morning and then eats 1/2 a piece of toast with fruit puree and some sort of fruit (a handful of quartered grapes or a couple of diced

  • Sometimes you gotta get creative!  We typically eat organic "real food", so not a whole lot of processed stuff.  I make muffins or pancakes out of oats for breakfast, and usually can hide veggies in there.  Muffins are a GREAT way to use
