Not a napper...

My LO is 3 weeks old and most days this week he fights daytime naps like it's his job.  I am often lucky if I can get him to sleep for one two hour stretch during the day and then he'll take maybe a couple of 20-30 minute cat naps.  He gets extremely overtired, and despite my best efforts (rocking, swaddling, white noise, etc.) it never fails that as soon as I put him down to nap he wakes up screaming in about 5 minutes.

He's a newborn and I thought that they are supposed to be sleeping most of the time! Is anyone else's LO just not much of a napper?  Or could this be the 3 week growth spurt I have heard about?

Re: Not a napper...

  • my LO has problems napping too.  she wakes herself up during the day and it's hard for her to put herself back to sleep sometimes when she moves from that active to deep sleep cycle

  • Some babies aren't big sleepers!

  • I think that is extremely common, especially for newborns. Some babies need to be held for naps, I know my son did, and then grew out of it. He also took a lot of naps in the Ergo and stroller on walks. My daughter likes to nap in her swing or bouncy seat
  • I thought this with DD but she just needed more help napping. I wish I'd put in more effort when she was younger because it's still really hard to get her to nap but the days she sleeps more she does better at night.
  • My guy sometimes is nap resistant too often I'll put him in the Ergo and do things around the house and he'll be out like a light.
  • i will say, I'm on day 2 of successful (morning) naps. My LO has only 1, maybe 2 BM a day so I think in the afternoon she gets pretty gassy and thats why she wants to be held-as well as getting overstimulated.

  • My DS isn't a big napper he's 8 weeks old. He went one whole day with only little cat naps. He will sleep for 5-10 min and wake himself up.  He is getting a little better.
