Cranial Helmet - Do I get one for DS?

At my son's 4 month check up our Dr. suggested that he go see a specialist regarding the flat spot on the back of his head.  At the appt on Monday the specialist said that the flat spot is completely cosmetic.  There is no problem with the bones or brain, but based on the measurements they did recommend a cranial helmet.  His case is mild, and his face is symmetrical the spot is just on the back of his head.  Because of the cost (we have a high deductable insurance plan) we are debating whether or not to proceed with getting the helmet.  I?m afraid that if we don?t my DS will one day be upset that we didn?t fix this for him when we could, and that if we do get the helmet there won?t be enough improvement for it to have been worth while.  I?m stuck and just cannot decide what to do.  Any help/thoughts from those of you that have been through the cranial helmet process with a Mild case would be greatly appreciated.

  • DS had a pretty bad flat spot on his head around 4 months. By his 6 months appointment, it was pretty much gone, with no helmet. We just did lots and lots of tummy time, and had DS sleep on his side, propped up by a rolled up receiving blanket (alternatin

  • In order to recommend the helmet, typically the measurement for asymmetry has to be higher than the norm found in all human heads and at that point I think it's probably best to go ahead and get the helmet.

Our oldest daughter had a flat

Kelly, Mom to Christopher Shannon 9.27.06, Catherine Quinn 2.24.09, Trey Barton lost on 12.28.09, Therese Barton lost on 6.10.10, Joseph Sullivan 7.23.11, and our latest, Victoria Maren 11.15.12

Secondary infertility success with IVF, then two losses, one at 14 weeks and one at 10 weeks, then success with IUI and then just pure, crazy luck.  Expecting our fifth in May as the result of a FET.

  • Could you do a lot of tummy time, maybe even let him take naps on his tummy if you are right there with him and reevaluate in a couple of months?  You could always get it then right?

My DS has a very obvious flat spot on the back of his head (he won't sleep with his head turned to one side), but our pedi assured me it's a purely cosmetic issue, nothing is asymmetrical.  She told us to do more tummy time, have him sitting up more

  • It sounds like your DS has a pretty mild case and I would just do lots of tummy time and wait and see.  In a few short months, he'll be sitting most of the time and won't be spending all of time on his back/head.

  • I'm an orthotist who makes helmets so this is my suggestion.  When you say you saw a specialist, was in a neurosurgeon or plastic surgeon?  Or did you see an orthotist (person who makes orthopedic braces, like a helmet?)

  • We are getting a helmet. But our rage is pretty bad and have been on PT an monitoring his growth for three months so we know with out a doubt he will not grow out of it. My question is, how do you decide between DOC band and STARband???

  • Our insurance covers nothing, no matter what we get for why or where. We did all of our monitoring through a STARband company but I just wondered about DOC band. They explained it that Star makes the helmet the way you want the head to be and let the kid
