Toddler bed question

My son climbed out of his crib a couple weeks ago so he is now in a toddler bed.  We had just got him to the point of laying down and going to sleep without being fully rocked to sleep, but now of course he just gets out of bed to come find us. I don't mind rocking him to sleep, but I'd like to start a pattern of rocking a little bit and then him laying down in his bed alone eventually. I was thinking that if I could get him to start reading in bed a little bit by himself and then come rock with momma or daddy it might be an easy transition to when he is a true toddler to be able to say ok you can stay up but you have to lay in your bed and read.

does this sound realistic?  Do you think a three year old would stay in bed with a book if you set the expectation early?  Would your three year old?

I know this probably sounds like over planning but it took probably two months to get out of nursing to sleep and two more to get to the point of falling asleep by himself in the crib.  Sleep just doesn't come easily for this little guy.

Re: Toddler bed question

  • My 3 year old stays in bed readily. Our bedtime routine is that her Dad and I both read her two books. Then we/one of us (we're flexible on who does it and generally allow her to request who tucks her in) tuck her into her bed and talk about her day. T

  • When we moved Kate to a bed (real bed, we skipped the toddler bed, and she was 2.5), we told her that she couldn't get out of bed until Mom or Dad came to get her. She's a rule follower, so she doesn't get out of bed. She's allowed to put a stack of books

  • We pretty much skipped the toddler bed and crib (aside from a month where she actually used it for half the nights) and put her right into a twin bed at 18 months. She had a hard time with it and it took a good month to get her used to it. We have a si

Thanks everyone for the suggestions, I think we are going to try some super small changes to the routine and try to lay in bed with him, he will usually lay for almost a min before getting up if I'm right there so hopefully that will be a start.

  • My ds was a horrible sleeper as well. Was ebf never took a bottle and was nursed to sleep until he was well over 2. Didn't sttn until 22 months! So transitioning to a toddler bed was a huge fear for me.

Just moved him into a toddler bed at 2 and
