lo miserable when waking up

My lo has aways cried when waking up both in the morning and after his 1 nap.  In the morning he usually calms down pretty fast but his nap is awful (only 40 minutes) and he cries for at least half an hour after it.  It is obvious he is still tired but he won't go back to sleep or play quietly in his room after he wakes up.  His nap has always been like this.  I'm starting to find myself getting really annoyed because there seems to be nothing I can do to calm him.  He doesn't want up, he doesn't want down, he doesn't want to cuddle or play or eat or anything it seems. I'm just wondering if anyone else deals with this and has found a way to either get them to wake up happier or at least calm down faster.

  • Does your LO fall asleep on his own or do you rock him?  If it's the former maybe he's startled to wake up alone?

I don't know some kids are just slow to wake up, DD was like that for awhile but eventually grew out of it.  What about pu

  • You might get his ears checked? My son was like that for a while, and he had an ear infection. It hurts more when they lay down.
  • DD1 was like that when she woke up from naps.  We cut out naps because she would cry and be unconsolable for an hour+.  DD2 was fine with naps when she still did them but cries when she wakes up in the morning.  It doesn't matter whether I

  • Yup - happens for us too.  And most of the time, I'm napping with her (and there when she wakes up).  She has always had a really hard transition out of sleep.  I just let her take as long as she needs to get up from laying, to get out o

  • My toddler also needs some time to wake up.  I try to be patient but if she is whining/crying excessively and she doesn't want anything from us what we do is to walk away and pay less attention to her for a few minutes.  Sometimes they will g

  • Our 2 1/2 year old has been like this since Day 1.  A couple of weeks ago, when I was putting him to bed, I told him that when he wakes up, he doesn't have to cry.  That when I walk in the room, he can say, "Good morning!"  And that if h
