Possible UTI, 5 weeks pregnant, and terrified...

I've just been prescribed Macrobid (or actually the generic, nitrofurantoin) for a possible UTI.  I'm having symptoms for a UTI and my culture shows bacteria at the doctor's office, but the detailed test won't come back for a couple of days.  The doctor explained to me that this antibiotic is considered a class B drug which means they "believe" it is safe to take while in early pregnancy, but they don't really know.  I've read mixed reviews online about taking this antibiotic in early pregnancy and now I'm really afraid.  I just hit the 5 week mark today.  Has anyone else taken this drug for a UTI this early in pregnancy?  This is my first pregnancy and my husband and I were trying to conceive for over a year.  I'm sure I'm being paranoid, but I would love to hear of other women who did take this medication this early on.  Please share your thoughts!

    Class B drugs are usually fine. Your doctor wouldn't prescribe the drug unless he felt it was safe. With meds during pregnancy, you have to weigh the risks and the benefits. The risk of the antibiotic is smaller than the risk of an infection running ra

    Thank you both so much for replying!  My brain tells me these logical things you've both mentioned, but my heart worries...hahah!  I'm trying to relax and not think about it anymore.

    I was prescribed this at around 8-9 weeks. I didn't really know it could be harmful and took the full 7 day prescription. Personally, I had no side effects but I'm not sure about my baby. I'm a little tired of being worried about every single thing so

    Try not to worry...I'm sure it will be fine.  I had a UTI at about 6-7weeks with my first and I had to be on IV antibiotics for 2 weeks.  It was NO FUN.  Everything turned out fine and she is a healthy little lady!

    My OB Rx'd Macrobid about a week ago for what she thought was a bladder infection...It seems to have worked and I'm not worried about my baby. If you were that concerned about the medication, bringing your concerns up to her might have been a good idea.

    I am 5-6 weeks also, and was at the Dr. yesterday and also have a UTI. I was prescribed Macrobid, my Dr. said it was safe.

    I had a UTI with my first. They are VARY common. because while your uterus presses on it, it causes it to not be able to empty properly. Take the prescription because class B is fine. i believe i had the same thing prescribed to me and my DD is a H

    Obviously, I did go over all of this with my doctor before I left.  We went over all of the pros and cons.  She just kept saying that they didn't know for sure because there haven't been tests on humans.  I was curious to see if other mothe
