One & Done: Only child

Splurge or save?

Just for fun...if you know or are pretty sure you are OAD do you splurge on your LO or buy cheaper stuff because it will only be used by one kid and then given away or sold?

So far we are mostly in the splurge category and I justify it because my SIL can use the stuff for her second baby. It is just so much fun to buy him cute clothes!

Re: Splurge or save?

  • We bought a lot secondhand knowing we'd only use it once. I wish I had bought an Ergo but did fine with the Moby. We buy most toys and clothes on consignment. We are thinking of buying a swing set. We'll buy that new because I haven't found one secondhand

  • One of the reasons we are OAD is so we CAN splurge, and we can afford it... because there's just one of her :)  So yeah, I think we tend to splurge a bit. Not spoil.... splurge ;)

  • It really depends on the stuff. For example, we get most of his clothes at the consignment store, but do buy the cute higher-end stuff when I really love it.

I do wonder what will happen once he actually has an opinion about toys and starts askin

  • I guess I am a little of both but only because I've never really thought of my purchases in that way.  Not sure why I haven't, but it just has not been the case.  I think I try to save in any way I can; however, I do think my son has way more th
  • Splurge! Some of DD's dresses/ruffles cost more than my clothes. :)

But, we are a family that does not like to travel--we'd rather stay home. ;)

  • I'm pretty conservative about my spending, but I don't stress out about shelling out good money for DS.  For example, he has two sets of (very nice) snow boots and 2 snow suits.  We didn't want to have to worry about taking them to and from d

  • Splurge because we can. I would be more likely to save if I knew we were having another.

I've been able to give some really nice clothes to friends of mine who have since had baby girls and I know they appreciated it. We intend on donating some

  • A little bit of both.

DD is the 4th girl in my extended family in 10 years. So we have a lot of great hand-me-downs. That means, when I do buy something for her, I buy something I really love and it is usually a splurge. The good news is that #5

  • A little of both. I'm oddly frugal about certain things, but love to splurge on certain clothes for her. I buy most of her clothes second hand, but then I am pretty obsessed with personalized holiday shirts and cute holiday outfits and I buy all those new

  • Both - depends on what it is.  Since she was our first we wanted all brand new gear and toys.  Her play clothes are usually from Target / Old Navy (& Carters when there is a sweet sale and I have a coupon).  Her Godmother has bo

  • I never really thought about it. I guess I just buy whatever I like. I'm always a bargain hunter but for good things so I guess this puts me in the little of both category. If I really love something, though, I don't even look at the price! My neighbor ha

  • Splurge, usually.  Then I look at everything as she grows past it and think, "what a waste" but then continue to splurge LOL!

  • A little bit of both.  We buy a lot of clothes first hand without worrying about it and bought all of her furniture and baby gear new. We borrowed a co-sleeper, exersaucer, and play mat from a friend, and my cousin gives me great hand me downs as wel
  • We buy new shoes, but save and buy cheap/used on most everything else clotheswise. We figure while DD is young, we can put that towards a college fund/savings account. When she's older, we will probably buy more new stuff (mostly because she will have

  • I guess we're in the splurge category just due to the fact that I don't buy her anything second hand.  I know you can find perfectly good toys and clothes that are gently used but I just can't for some reason.  That being said, we don't exact

  • Splurge. For sure. Plus, she's the only grandchild and the grandparents give her a lot of really nice things too.

An example: I was going to buy her an outdoor playhouse thing from a garage sale in our sub ... she won't use something like that

  • We do a little bit of both.  Everything except her carseat and nursery furniture were bought at consignment.  I buy some clothes on consigment but I also tend to stock up when Carter's has their big sales.  DH and I are both big savers.&nbs
