Babies: 3 - 6 Months

Baby Houdini

Help!

My baby is 3.5 months old now, has been STTN since 8 weeks and recently found her hands. She sucks and chews on her hands CONSTANTLY. We have to swaddle her at night yet because she will suck on her hands and flail them around and keep herself awake if we don't. Now that she's a little bigger, there's not much we can do to keep her in the swaddle. I've been swaddling her, nursing her and then rocking her to sleep, carefully putting her in the crib and then she's fine. If she wakes up at all through the night, she somehow gets her hands out of the swaddle and starts sucking again. If I catch her quick enough, I can usually get in there, reswaddle her and get her back to sleep right away.

After being awake for an hour and a half at 2:30 this morning trying to get her back to sleep, I'm out of answers. I've thought of trying a Halo Swaddle Sleepsack with the velcro, but they only make them in Newborn or Small as far as I'm aware and she's too big for them.

What do I do!? Anyone else have this issue with their LO?

  • I believe the small Halo Swaddles are up to 18 lbs.  We are currently using one on DS as he has the same tendency. We still have a little time before DS outgrows it (like an inch *maybe*).  I'll start him off with arms in tightly, but no

  • Try the miracle blanket... that is what we used when S was too crazy to be unswaddled and couldn't sleep if she wasn't... It worked for a little while and then we started to swaddle loose so that she could get used to not having one, and then moved to the

  • We were in the same situation and went with Merlin's Magic Sleep Suit.  We love it.  It only took him about a night to adjust to it. It hasn't been a magic bullet as far as STTN goes, but it calms his startle reflex down to the point where he

  • One word: Woombie!  I used to joke that if our house was burning down, that's what I would save, it changed our lives :)
  • Sounds like your LO is ready to be unswaddled.  DS pretty much outgrew his Halo swaddle sleepsack by 3.5 months.  We decided to switch him over to a sleepsack and let him self-soothe with his hands.  We were tired of bouncing/rocking him to

  • In the same stage here. We switched to the miracle blanket, but she's managed to get out of that too. I'm tempted to try the miracle suit. She won't sleep more than an hour if unswaddled.
