New bedtime routined needed

Can you guys give me some idea's for a better bedtime routine. We are fine with getting the pj's on and brushing the teeth and reading. The part that I don't like is sitting in the room with DD whose almost 3 until she falls asleep. I'm not sure when this started but I am pretty sure it started around the time I got preggo with LO (sept/oct 2012) and DH sort of took over since I was so sick. He's gone this week and we started trying to fall asleep at 8:30 last night. I never left the room until 11. That is unusal, she doesn't ever take that long for him, but still. I didn't think at this age we would still be sitting in there while she fell asleep. Help pls.
