Nurseries and Baby Gear

Must haves?

I am expecting my first child... I have no idea where to start on what I absolutely need and what is not completely necessary. Can you ladies tell me what items you must have for the nursery and anything else that might be a huge help once the baby is here?

We are in a 4 bedroom house right now and have one room set up as an office for my husband - he works from home on days that he isn't able to go in (sick, family emergencies)... IF need be, we can set up his computer in our walk in closet - there is plenty of space in there for a desk. Most of our family lives out of town and we have the room which will be the nursery as a guest room right now.

I guess my question is what furniture is a must have in your nursery?

  • If you haven't already, check out the Baby Bargains book and lucieslist.com for good reviews of must have items.

In our nursery, the must have items are the crib and dresser with changing pad on top.  Really nice to have are an upholst

  • We have a rocker/recliner that we love in the nursery. It is so comfortable. Other must haves are Aden and Anais swaddle blankets. We use them for everything from swaddling to burp clothes. We also love the Wubbanubs and the Swaddle Me!

  • For us, we like having a crib, dresser with changing pad on top, tall metal trash can for diapers, rocking chair, bookshelf and small toy box. We keep most toys in the living room, or else I would want more toy storage in the nursery.
  • Did any of you ladies use a bassinet or did you do the crib from the beginning? I've been told I need a bassinet...

  • We have a crib/changing table combo, a rocking recliner, and a small table next to the recliner. There was not enough space for a dresser, so we got some Rubbermaid storage totes with drawers that we keep in the closet; they work just fine.

  • We used a Rock-n-Play beside our bed for the first 2 months.  (I breastfeed so it was easier to feed him every 2-3 hours and still get sleep this way.) Then for the next 4 months we moved him to a cheap pack-n-play in our room, but further aw

  • It is so hard to follow someone else's list or experience and use it for yourself. I think the best thing to do is really think about your own lifestyle. For most families a crib is a must. Beyond on that it depends. Do you live in a home where you believ
  • I would second the rock n play, it was a total life-saver.  I would also agree with the Aden and anais swaddling blanket (47"x47").  I would also recommend space bags for clothing.  I found the stroller to be a waste of money and instead I

  • We did not have a bassinet and I wish we did. My LO refused to sleep in the crib until he was 2 months old and we did not have a bassinet, so he slept in his swing in our room and I think it would have been easier to transition him to the crib if he had s
