Azoospermia questions

Hi there, I just found this board and hope that you ladies might be able to help me

I am 30, myFI is 32. He had the mumps as a child, so when we got engaged, we went to his GP for a check-up. He did an SA in Sept 2012 and no sperm were found. We then went to a specialist urologist, who repeated the SA as well as did blood work. Again no sperm found. When we went to meet with her to discuss his prognosis she said that while his fre testosterone was low, his hormones levels were not significantly outside of the normal range.

My FI is also a competetive athlete and had used "performance enhancing" supplements for the last decade. The urologist suggested that he stop all supplements and that we see an RE to determine whether he needs therapy to get his hormones normal and get him to start producing sperm again.

We aren't planning on TTC until after our wedding (Mar 2014) but I do have some questions for anyone who has btdt.

1.  Should we go through IVF now (in 2013) and freeze the embroys in order to have "younger" eggs? (It would be at least 1 yr after we"re married before TTC)

2. What are the chances that hormone therapy alone could reverse the azoo?

3. How long/what would we have to try before the doctor's suggest moving on to DS?

Re: Azoospermia questions

  • Hi and congradulations on your upcoming wedding. Sorry for your DX.

You should really ask a reproductive endocrinologist (RE) these questions but I'll take a shot.

    1. You have much better success rates with fresh cycles and you are b

  • Hello.

    My DH also has Azoo.

The performance enhancing drugs could be the culprit. I would stop all of that like the doctor says.

There are only a handful of male fertility urologists that specialize in micro surgery

  • Oh, Liz has a very good point.  You should get checked out too before making a decision as to do IVF now or later.  Most likely you'll be just fine but I also have DOR so for us time was a huge factor.  You may want to get checked out.
