If your LO had a food allergy ??

If your LO had a food allergy, how did they test for it? Can they do blood work for food allergies or is it pretty much process of elimination?

(My friend's LO has been battling hives / excema / allergic reaction and since he's EBF, she thinks it may be a dietary allergy. She has tried LITERALLY everything else you may think of as far as special creams / lotions / coconut oil / changing detergents, etc). She has cut out dairy here and there but I don't think she has lasted more than a week each time she tries that.

Her Pedi and Dermatologist are not much help - the derm is having her use a cortisone cream, which is treating the symptoms but not solving the issue. Plus she's not keen on using a ton of steroid cream all the time over his whole body.

I think it might take something like 2 weeks to eliminate residual dairy proteins so if your friend is going to test by elimination, she'll need to commit for longer.

  • DD, who I'm still BFing, is milk soy protein intolerant. I've been dairy and soy free for 9 months. The first few weeks are the hardest but it gets easier. We're now trying to reintroduce and it seems to be going well.

  • Sorry she's dealing with this!  Blood work can definitely be done but often the results are not reliable until at least a year so convincing a pedi is hard.  Are there any pediatric allergists in your area?  Our's has been a miracle.
