Travelling with a Newborn

I think I know the answer to this... but... MIL is from Holland originally and is travelling there for an anniversary party that is on either Aug. 22 or 24 (can't remember which, but I know it's either the day before or after my anniversary) with FIL, SIL, possibly a cousin... So, they offered to pay for DH, Hunter and I to go as well. I think it's probably too soon for me to travel that far (I'm due July 23), especially if I go late or end up with any complications, c-section, etc. But... I thought I'd ask for some other opinions just to see. Giving up a free trip to Holland is killing me!

They did say we could wait and decide last minute. That way, if I go early, we could still go if we were feeling up to it. Still... Not sure...

Re: Travelling with a Newborn

  • I'm a FTM, but I've talked to many ladies who claim it took the whole 6 or 8 weeks to feel "normal" again. The thought of turbulence with a freshly sewn up hoo ha just makes me shudder... add on toting a newborn along and that just scares me.

  • I wouldn't fly with LO under 6 weeks.  Airlines might have a policy on this as well. Also your LO would require a passport for international travel, so you will need to make sure you have enough time to acquire one after birth.

  • Duh, right, I didn't even THINK about passports, germs, etc. Good grief, where's my brain... I will double check with the doctor. I think having a firm "no" from the doc would make me feel better about declining my ILs very generous offer too. I can tell

  • I'd check with your pedi.  I think I remember at one point it wasn't suggested for a newborn to fly before 4-6 weeks.  Plus, if you go late, baby won't have had shots....and planes can be NASTY.

  • I'm due July 11th and will be traveling to NYC for my brother's wedding August 30th.  We will be driving though.  I'm not sure about flying.

  • The earliest most airlines will let you travel with a newborn is about 2 weeks. I was three weeks when I flew for the first time. I'm fine.

  • We were invited to a wedding in Spain this June and had been planning on traveling with a 6 mo old, or a 5 mo old, or a 4 mo old, all the way down to a 2 mo old. I debated whether we'd take a 1 mo old or not. I figure with a summer baby there would be

  • Check with the airline. I wouldn't fly with a newborn under 6 weeks. Especially internationally. Not to mention that you may still be recovering, and an international flight could really mess up what little sleep schedule you've established with LO. </

  • Also, if you want to do this then you need to get on the ball with a passport for the little baby! It can take four to six weeks for it to process, so basically the minute baby is out of the oven you need to ship off that paperwork with a photo.

  • This is a redundant answer but the passport would probably be the only thing that would stop me...well that and it would depend on what the pediatrician said:)  If I got the go ahead, the trip was free, had the passport and I was feeling ok, I'd prob
  • I wouldn't. There's the passport reason, the germs (somewhat), but really tiring is exhausting and you're already tired. The earliest I considered flying with DS1 was October and he's also a July baby. We ended up going overseas when he was 6 months old a
