Babies: 3 - 6 Months

Starting Rice Cereal

Our doc just gave us the green light to start our 4 month old preemie twin boys on cereal. (of course trying one food at a time and watching 3 days for allergies) I was going to start tonight and let them experiment with it but I'm coming up with questions we didnt think to ask the doc...

How much should we start them with?

Should we still offer them formula after the food or try to feed the cereal between bottles?

Should we feed cereal at our dinner time feeding or wait until right before bed?

Any other tips?

  • We started with a tablespoon or two at the dinner time feeding. Work up as you find things they like.

We offer the solids before the bottle, unless they are really really hungry. At that point, they're really not willing to try something new. T

O didn't like cereal when I gave it to him, but daycare said he loved it. Turns out their method is 2 Tbsp of cereal, half a scoop of formula, and water to a thin oatmeal consistency. Since I started that, he gobbles it down. Plus I

  • I wait about 30-60 minutes after milk to try. My LO doesn't like rice cereal BTW, so you can also try oatmeal or barley if you think they aren't crazy about it after a few days. Of course, you can also just try nearly liquified real foods- check out The W
