First Bath ... when and how

I am first time mom, and our daughter is one week old today!  (crazy considering her due date is still two days away)  My husband and I were just talking this morning about her needing a bath.  We are both a little freaked out to do it.  When should we giver her, her first bath?  She did have a bath while still in the hospital.  We are also open to advice/things to keep in mind as we embark on this new adventure :)

Re: First Bath ... when and how

  • Sponge bath until her cord stump falls off.  We just lay her on a towel and try to keep her covered up and just uncover each limb/body part as we go so she stays mostly covered (she hates being wet/cold).  Our DD is 1 week old too :)

  • We bathe DS every 2-3 days and have since we brought him home.  If your LO still has her cord stump, just do a sponge bath.  Make sure you have everything you need in place before you start!  Also, it definitely still takes 2 people for us

  • My hospital discharge instructions were to sponge bathe my ds every other day with no product until the umbilical cord stump fell off and then regular bath after that.
  • Sponge bath til the cord stump falls off then a regular bath.  We bathe DS every 2-3 days now.  Like PPs said - have everything in place beforehand and it still takes us 2 people to give the bath because DS is so squirmy - he's 4 weeks old today

  • Our pedi told us it was not necessary to sponge bath until the stump falls off and to just make sure you dry it off well once LO is out of the tub.

We also bathe every other day or every 2 days.

  • The first time is intimidating, so get YH to help. I did a water-only sponge bath until his stump fell off, but I'm not sure that's even necessary. I am just now using soap at a little over 3 weeks.

  • I'm surprised so many people are bathing their newborns every 2 days! We do a sponge bath until the stump falls off (DD's fell off really early so she only had one sponge bath) and we do regular baths now and she has only had 2. Newborn skin is very se

  • We bathe our 21 month old every three days. We use to do it more often, but his skin would get dried out.... Putting DS2 on the same schedule.
