For that pronunciation, I'd use the spelling Mara. I pronounce Maura as 'more-uh'.

I would pronounce Mara as MAR-uh.

Maura would be MORE-uh.

I think from previous discussions, this is a regional thing. I'm from New England.

Mara= MAH- rah

Maura = MORE- uh (or Laura with an M)

Both names are pretty, I slightly prefer Maura.

This is funny to me. I'm from the mid-atlantic, and pronounce them pretty much the same.

I pronounce Maura as "Maw-rah", not "more-ah" as most people have said.

Long Answer: I've liked this name since I was a kid and heard it on one of my Mother's soap operas. I've always pronounced it Maruh. My name is Laura, which I pronounce Laruh.

IMO they are two different names. Mara would be mar-uh and Maura would be more-uh. So I would use Mara with the pronunciation you're going for.

My daughter is Mara, pronounced mar-uh. We were worried about having to correct people frequently, but most people pronounce it right so far. I like Mara louise
