I had forgotten about this stage

I don't know if it's just my kids, but we've hit a point where DD2 understands what we say, but we just can't reason with her yet. That means we have to be careful with that we say around her if we don't want to find ourselves dealing with tantrum after tantrum.

We had the same issue with DD1, and it was a real struggle to get my parents to understand.

I find it's even harder now because DD1 is at an age where she gets it, and she also can tell what makes sense and what doesn't. For instance, my parents will ask if we're having cake for lunch. She'll laugh and say "Nooooooooo!". But then they'll ask DD2 the same thing. DD2 doesn't get it. All she understands is they asked if she wants cake but then they're not giving her any. Meltdown.

I found myself getting really annoyed with my parents this weekend because no matter how I told them to please be careful, it all seemed to go in one ear and out the other. So frustrating.

  • I'm dealing with the same thing with my parents! Yesterday DS was eating some cake because it was my mom's bday. She jokingly said, oh, would you like ice cream with that? Well, of course he wants ice cream! He freaked out and of course she gave into him

  • That's pretty crummy. We haven't had to deal with that since we're not around family. I was very specific when my parents came to visit - they weren't allowed to say junk food words (ice cream and cookie, specifically) and managed to do that for the mo

  • We really haven't had to deal with that but certain words will set her off. We have to spell out bath because if we say it she expects a bath. It sucks when other people interfere even if its not on purpose.
  • Oh no :(

The only thing that really triggers this for us right now, is when someone talks about going outside, she REALLY wants to go out.  But I know it's probably going to get worse.  Because she isn't saying a lot of words, people ju

  • Who jokes about cake around a baby? That is so mean! I get it. DS understands everything and we are big on following through. If you say it you had better do it. Even with Easter candy, if you are going to give him candy and treats you had better be expec

  • Yep.  We're there.  Ugh.

  • oh yes, "OUTSIDE". That was one of DD1's trigger words as well (along with "PARK").

My mom was especially bad with this. She would say anything to save herself from a meltdown. Like when she'd leave after visiting, she'd tell DD1 she was just goi

  • We aren't hitting this stage too badly. There are definite trigger words that will set her off (although mostly her reaction depends on her mood) but fortunately most of the time I am able to distract her or talk her out of it.

    I do feel bad, tho

And what I've found to be helpful is to warn her right away when she will be all done. For example, I'll say,
