Babies: 3 - 6 Months

transitioning from swaddle and to crib

LO is 4 months old. He is still sleeping our room in his bassinet, swaddled. We have been working on transitioning to his crib for awhile now with naps. 2 weeks ago he started rolling over both ways so I know that sleeping in his crib with arms swaddled is not an option anymore. Looking for some advice from other mommas, should I start with unswaddling with one arm out or both since he is rolling. Any tips or advice is much appreciated. Thanks!

Re: transitioning from swaddle and to crib

  • Does he attempt to roll while swaddled? It can take quite a while for babies to master rolling enough to do it in their sleep. Many parents continue swaddling for as long as baby needs it- up to 6+ months. But if you want to do it now, then give it a

  • We stopped swaddling with arms in about 2 weeks ago. She never had an issue, even though I was convinced it was going to be a nightmare! We tried one arm out a few times around 12 weeks and that just seemed to anger her... I say just give either way a t

No he hasn't tried to roll while swaddled, but I have found him on his side when he woke up from a nap once. I'll try one arm out and see how it goes. Thanks ladies!
  • We started out with the arms unswaddled in the sleep sack and then went cold turkey after a couple of days.

  • The transition was really tough for us to unswaddled. What ended up working was a zipadeezip. It's kind of like a sleep sack with arms. His startle reflex was dampened. Definitely wasn't a miracle worker, but it helped. We did naps for about a week before

  • If he's starting to roll I would be a bit concerned about the swaddling coming loose or twisted up on him.

We stopped swaddling just before our LO started rolling (it just happened to work out that way).  I've been putting him in a sleep sac

  • I agree with above. We swaddled my oldest until into his 6th month when he really was moving around a lot and was in danger of hurting himself.

One step at a time is the way to go - into the crib first & then out of the swaddle (whenever y

  • DD is 4 months and we just moved out of our room a couple weeks ago but still in RnP.  She is still swaddled but like it and she sleeps 12 hours at night.  Her startle reflex is still pretty strong so I don't think we'll be losing the swaddle an
  • C slept swaddled, in a playpen in our room until 4 months. I moved her to her crib first, which went fine. I use 2 rolled up blankets under the bedsheet to help position, otherwise shes all over the place. I started swaddling with one arm out...I still am
