Nap time nightmare

My three and half year old step son recently stopped taking naps. I was sending him to bed at 9 and then he started falling asleep about an hour before bath time. So I moved bedtime to 8. The last couple nights around 6 6:30 he'll start to get really grouchy, he wound himself in time out, where he fell asleep.

It doesn't matter what time I send him to bed, he'll still wake up at the same time in the morning. And if I give him a nap he stays up until 11 11:30 and doesn't get enough sleep. But if I don't give him a nap he falls asleep really early.

I don't know what to do! I'm so frustrated!

Re: Nap time nightmare

  • It sounds like he wants to consolidate his sleep into one segment, not get less.  So, move bedtime up.  8pm is still pretty darn late for most kids - not all - and certainly without a nap.  You might move bedtime to 6:30 or 7 at the latest.

My DS has recently started skipping naps frequently. He goes to bed about 8:15 on days he gets a nap and about 7:15 on days he doesn't. Try to watch your LO for signs of being tired to figure out when a good bed time is.

  • What time does he wake up? I would expect him to need 11 to 12 hrs of sleep, so just adjust bedtime so he gets that much.

  • Instead of a nap(which is fun when they fight it, but still kinda need it), insist on a period of quiet time. Make him sit with a book or something quiet for a good 30 minutes, that may help replace the nap and quell the grouchiness

  • Change nap to quiet time and start bedtime routine at 7 - in bed by 730.  No matter how they get it, his age should get around 10-12 hours of sleep.  Good luck!
