Potentially Dumb Question about MOTN Feedings

For Mobile Users: Potentially Dumb Question about MOTN Feedings

Do you let LO decide when to stop waking up at night for feedings or do you actually "train" them out of it?

DD1 sttn at 9 weeks so outside of sleep training to get her to fall asleep on her own in her crib at the beginning of the night, we never dealt with MOTN feedings for very long, so Im kind of clue less.

DD2 is still waking up several times a night and usually 2 times a night I nurse her-- the other times a binky replacement, shushing etc gets her back to sleep. Her pedi mentioned at her 4 month appt that she is big enough and eating enough during the day to nix the nightime feedings but she genuinely seems hungry and actually fully nurses, not just for comfort, so I havent done anything, just assuming she'd do it on her own at some point. Should I be doing something to get her out of this MOTN feeding pattern since her pedi said she doesnt need it? Is this a habit or a need? I dunno, can babies even eat out of habit alone?

I realize how stupid this sounds as Im typing it, so sorry to be a bimbo on this one!

Re: Potentially Dumb Question about MOTN Feedings

  • We started sleep training at 3 weeks, but there are plenty of families that choose to follow baby's lead on this too.  It's really what is comfortable for you and your family, but it is true, by 4 months if the baby is getting enough nutrition during

  • I think it's hard to know when the night waking is a habit vs actual hunger.  Technically after about 6 months, and when your pedi says so, it's true the baby doesn't need it nutritionally but I still struggle with how to know if he's really hungry o

We started sleep training at 5 months and my LO quickly got the hang of going to sleep on his own.&nbsp

  • Haha, I do think at some point you'll have to train her out of some of the wake-ups.  In the chapter about night weaning, the basics are to pick the longest stretch you want the baby to sleep (so let's say you start with 4 hours) and then you just do

  • At around 5 months DD started sleeping a solid 7-8 hour stretch almost every night (so from 7-3 or 8-4) then wake up, nurse, sleep again for a couple more hours. So I figured from that point, if she wakes up between 1-3 am, she shouldn't be hungry so I

  • Ds cut out MOTN feedings when he was ready, which was around 6 months. There is no magic weight or age when they are ready, every child is different. You know your baby best, and if Lo is genuinely hungry, continue feeding at night. Lo will drop the night

  • I roughly "sleep trained" LO at 3 months to self soothe herself to sleep (most of the time) but I'm taking her lead on the night eating. She sleeps like 6pm til 5am then eats then back down til 7ish. I don't mind that at all so I just letting her keep tha

  • ds#2 is 7 months old and still eats 2-3 times at night.

As long as its quick and he goes back to sleep after, I'm not worried about it.

  • Thanks for all the replies. Last night DD seemed to be on a 4.5 hour schedule, which resulted in two wakings for feedings which Im fine with. Im going to see if thats her new pattern or a fluke and work from there.

I think watching her spacing o

  • Not a dumb question at all! My DD gets up for one MOTN feeding every night. When we saw the pedi for her 6 month appointment, he said she definitely does not "need" that feeding and I should cut it out. However, I am still torn. Primarily because she i
