Potentially Dumb Question about MOTN Feedings (XP from 6-9m)

For Mobile Users: Potentially Dumb Question about MOTN Feedings

Do you let LO decide when to stop waking up at night for feedings or do you actually "train" them out of it?

DD1 sttn at 9 weeks so outside of sleep training to get her to fall asleep on her own in her crib at the beginning of the night, we never dealt with MOTN feedings for very long, so Im kind of clue less.

DD2 is still waking up several times a night and usually 2 times a night I nurse her-- the other times a binky replacement, shushing etc gets her back to sleep. Her pedi mentioned at her 4 month appt that she is big enough and eating enough during the day to nix the nightime feedings but she genuinely seems hungry and actually fully nurses, not just for comfort, so I havent done anything, just assuming she'd do it on her own at some point. Should I be doing something to get her out of this MOTN feeding pattern since her pedi said she doesnt need it? Is this a habit or a need? I dunno, can babies even eat out of habit alone?

I realize how stupid this sounds as Im typing it, so sorry to be a bimbo on this one!

  • I will not be trying to train out of MOTN feedings. My son is almost 20 weeks and still wakes once a night for a feeding. He drinks the entire 6 ounces. I try to put him back to sleep with his pacifier, patting, shushing etc first, but if he still awake i

  • Doesn't sound stupid at all.  This is something that I'm dealing with too.  DD did not have MOTN feedings at this age so it's new to me.

I use my own judgement and I am weaning DS off of his one MOTN feeding.  Our pedi agrees that

  • We are very baby led in this house. We let them grow out of the feeding. With my son he wakes up once at 5-6 am and drinks 2-4 oz. I will let him continue this until he eventually stops, which he will. My daughter was the same way. Down at around 8-9 pm,

  • It's not dumb.

I read the Ferber book, and plan to train DS to drop his MOTN feed when he turns 5 months.  Ferber explains that babies often will wake up MOTN hungry because they've been trained to wake up and get fed then, so it is a "learn

  • My LO still wakes at night and as long as he's eating, I figure he's hungry and I will feed him. I imagine he'll grow out of it on his own. He use to wake up every 1.5-2 hrs to eat, then every 3 hrs, then every 3.5 etc so he's already spacing out his feed
