Pregnant after 35

anyone worry they will be too old to enjoy grandkids?

I am sure I am stressing about this for nothing...but does anyone ever wonder if their kids will have kids early enough for you to enjoy grandkids growing up? I always imagined having tons of grandkids and even possibly keeping them while my children worked if I were still in good enough shape. But I did not have kids until later in life (my decision) and I would love to even have 1 more. However, I will be 40 in October and sometimes I think that if I have my kids at 38 and 40 and then if THEY also decide not to have kids until they are that age as well (35 or older), then I could potentially be almost 80 years old before my first grandchild is even born...if I am even alive then.

I know this may totally be irrational and who knows, my kids could have kids in their 20's...nobody knows!!  For some reason I just think about this ALL the time!!  My focus is obviously raising my own children right now, I just look so forward to having grandchildren.

ETA: please nobody get offended by this....i, of course, understand some people do not have a choice getting pregnant this late in life because of infertility issues, etc and this post is in no way meant to hurt anyone because of that.  just wondering if, whether your decision was by choice or not, if anyone else has felt this way as well

  • I wouldn't say that I think about it all the time, but you're definitely not alone. When I was single in my early thirties, I used to lament that I was going to wind up old and alone with no grandchildren to come visit me. Now I'm married and expecting my

  • Oh yeah, I'm with you there.  I was 36 with #1 and now almost 39 with #2....I hope my kids don't wait as long as I did LOL.  At the same time, I want them to live their own lives and make their own choices, and I definitely don't want them ha

  • I try not to think about that kind of stuff.  There are lots of older parents. Do your best to stay healthy, fit and active. Enjoy your babies now and don't worry about what you can't change.

  • I feel so much better just seeing the replies of others that have had the same thoughts!!  I know we cannot change anything at this point so I just try not to dwell on it.

My mom had me early (at 18)...DH's mom had him even earlier (at 16),

  • I plan to enjoy having a kid at the moment, honestly I haven't even thought about how old I would be when he will graduating from HS. I take it one day at a time.
  • I was born when my mother was 41 and my dad was 48.  I don't mean to offend anyone, but this was my experience.  My parents retired when I was in Jr. High, so I got to spend a lot of time with them when I was in high school.  M

  • My situation is a little different than most. My DH and I are very excited about our new baby. I had two boys by my early twenty's, and my DH has a son from previous relationship.  I will be 40 in a couple of weeks but I wouldn't chang
  • I do think about it too sometimes.  My Mom isn't 60 yet so she is running around with all the grandkids and doing great and I know I probably won't be this young when my grandkids come.  It's a plus to be young, but there's also a lot to being o
  • I have thought of this and wish I thought of it many years before we started trying to have kids.  When you are younger it never crosses your mind.

  • It has crossed my mind, but I firmly believe I had kids at the best possible time in my life. I loved my 20's, traveled a great deal, and spent a great deal of time building my career. Now, I am very settled.

  • I'm worried but not that worried. My dad was mid-30's when I was born and he's certainly enjoying his grandkids.

  • I don't worry about not being around for grandkids, it's something I have no control over, after all.  I'd rather make sure that my child has kids when and IF she wants them.  Hopefully I'll still be around, but if she waits like me, until she's
