3rd Trimester

Popping over from first tri (medication question)

So I LITERALLY just found out were are expecting on Thursday night. No one was at my OB's office over the long weekend because of the holiday. I seem to have come down with a crappy cold with a mid-grade fever (100.9) over the weekend.  I am calling my OB's office tomorrow to set up a first appointment, but I haven't even met with him to have him give me the run-down that you need at your first appt./ultrasound. My question is, can I take Robitussin Night Time Peak Cold? Active ingredients are: Acetaminophen (for fever/aches)Diphenhydramine (Antihistamine/ cough suppressant)Phenylephrine (nasal decongestant)  I THINK they are all safe based on what I have read, and I really need to get some sleep tonight. I know you ladies know more than I do. I will certainly be calling my OB first thing to discuss and set up and appt. Thanks for your help!

Re: Popping over from first tri (medication question)

  • I would take plain old tylenol right now for the fever.  That needs to be remedied now.  As for the decongestant and robitussin, I would wait until I talk to the doctor.  I have received mixed responses (by different doctors) regarding t

  • My OB told me to avoid phenylephrine, at least during the first trimster.  Diphenhydramine (benadryl) and acetominophen (tylenol) are safe.

  • You need to find a formulation that has pseudoephedrine, aka real Sudafed, not phenylephrine. Also, my midwife has said acetaminophen, diphenhydramine, and pseudoephedrine are all OK to take, but I'd be wary of taking them all together. Can you stick with

  • My OB says no pseudoephedrine or phenylephrine at all, let alone in the first tri... I'd wait and see what your doctor recommends.

I'd stick to just Tylenol at this point, personally.

  • It's all on my safe list from my OB but I personally prefer the regular Sudafed (pseudophedrine) from behind the pharmacy counter (also on the safe list) over phenylephrine. I'd separate it out into Tylenol, Sudafed, and Benadryl (but the generics bc I'm

  • I was told that regular variety Sudafed, Tylenol and Robotussen were ok, but only the standard variety. Extra strength, night time, cold and flu, etc should be avoided.

  • I just got over the flu a couple weeks ago. Doc told me to take Tylenol PM for sleep and Tylenol cold/flu for the two worst days (though I only took two doses, made me feel odd). I found relief with a saline nose rinse - actually it was a godsend. Good lu

I would only take tylenol at this point. During the first tri they really don't want you to take much. I would wait till the drs office is open.
Nasal strips are great, saline spray, humidifier are great ways to help for now.

  • If I were you and was that early in my pregnancy, I would only take Tylenol to control my fever. I was really sick when I first found out, and that's all I took. I also had a sore throat and it helped. Restrictions are tighter in the first trimester than
