Natural Birth

Tearing..

My DH and i are expecting our 4th and quite honestly I have had hesitation about getting pregnant again because of my recovery with my last. With my first 2 deliveries my tearing wasn't too bad and I healed quickly. My last delivery was very fast and I ended up with a 3rd degree tear. At 6 months my doctor said I still wasn't completely healed in some areas and to refrain from sex a little longer.  I have read that some doctors will automatically offer a cesarean if you have had a 3rd or 4th degree tear to prevent further damage- I definitely do not want this to be the case! Have any of you have a 3rd or 4th degree and went on to tear less with your next or had no tearing at all?

Re: Tearing..

  • I cannot speak from experience but my SIL has 4 babes. She had a 3rd degree with her 1st and smallest babe. She did not have more than a 1st degree with her other three. I believe with her 3rd babe she did not tear at all and she was the largest out of all 4.

Hope that gives you some hope!

  • I have not had experience with 3-4th degree tearing but I hear that delivering very quickly can cause that.  Have you thought about hiring a doula or midwife who can coach you slowly through the pushing phase?  My second boy came very fast (so fast he was delivered in the car outside the hospital :-).  He was HUGE 10 pounds 7 ounces.  I think the only thing that kept me from tearing was that I was trying to hold him in and my body just slowly pushed him out by itself.  I was trying so hard NOT to have him in the car I never pushed.  I only had a 1st degree with him.  Best wishes for the delivery you hope for! :-)

  • No personal experience as I have only had one.  I do have a friend who had a really bad second degree tear with her first.  The baby was only 8 lbs but she pushed her out pretty quickly which is probably why she tore.  Her second was about the same size as her first but she did not tear at all.  Hopefully you will have less tearing with this one!
  • My BFF tore horribly with her first two and not at all with #3 and #4.  She had waterbirths with the last two and she thinks that made the difference.  And her first baby was only 5.5 pounds, while the last was 7.5, so size wasn't the issue.

If I were you, I would try for a waterbirth.

  • I had a 4th degree tear with my DS (1st baby).  I am concerned with exactly what you're questioning but my midwife says there isn't necessarily any reason to expect tearing with further deliveries....
