When to go back to work?

I'm conflicted about when I should return to work from maternity leave. I get paid leave through the 23rd. My first option is to return the week after Christmas (the 29th). This would mean I'm only taking a few days unpaid which would be best financially (we can technically afford for me to take some unpaid time, but we have a bunch of extra expenses right now so it would be great to not miss much incoming $). If I return on the 29th it would also be a short week, and then I would get holiday pay for NYE and NY Day (I don't get paid holidays if I'm still on maternity leave, it sucks).

Except we are having family in town for Christmas and through the weekend. They'll probably leave on Sunday morning, but the idea of starting back after a busy weekend with company here doesn't sound that appealing. Also, our daycare provider is only watching DD right now until after the holidays. Her husband has that week off, so he would be home with them all day, it would just be her family and our 2 DDs. This is so stupid but I just don't like her husband. Nothing terrible, he's just kind of cranky and not friendly. He works long hours and is never home when my DD is there usually. For some reason this just bothers me.

Option #2 would be to return after the New Year. This would obviously mean more unpaid time, and I wouldn't get paid for any of the holidays I missed. It also seems kind of silly to start back on a Friday, but otherwise I would have to take yet another day unpaid and start on the next Monday, and work a full week my first week back (I'd rather not do that). Also, we already told our daycare provider I'm going back the week after Christmas, so although we've been paying for DD #1 all along, we would have to also pay her for DD #2 for that week, whether we bring them or not.

DH says it's up to me. It doesn't matter to my employer either.

What are your thoughts?

Re: When to go back to work?

  • Option #1.  Go back on the 29th.  It'll be great to get paid for two days off, and that short week will be a good way to ease back in (you won't be getting much done that week anyway ... you might even get to come in a little late/leave a little early).

  • option 1

work short days and get caught up on emails etc...

  • I would say Option 1.  It'll be a short week so more than likely the office will be dead and you can get readjusted to being back at work.
  • Option 2. ?I'd rather just have the rest of the holidays off and go back after family leaves and things have calmed down a bit. ?The few days of pay don't really sound worth it, and I would also like to go back on a Friday, work a few hours and then hit the ground running January 5.
  • #2, stay home with your babies and enjoy your time with them. Work will be there when you get back
