anyone heating with wood (woodstoves)

We have a BEAUTIFUL old (ooold) parlor-type woodstove that we primarily use to stay warm. However, as much as we love it, I am very concerned with keeping it in the house- it has an open grate front and removable eyes on the top. This means that depending on air pressure and if the fire isn't going good enough that it doesnt pull air properly and smokes up the house a bit. (we usually have to keep the pretty grate covered with aluminum foil so that it will vent) Also I know that it must smoke after we go to bed when the fire has died out because sometimes I wake up with a nosebleed or a really sore/dry throat. Until this point SO just thought I was overreacting, but now that a baby is on the way he totally agrees that we need a new one! (and we get to covert the old shop/garage into a 'mancave' with the old woodstove included) We recently read an article in one of our magazines that explained the that the EPA now limits emmisions to no more than 7.5 grams of smoke particulates per hour, and that most new models emit only 2 to 4 grams per hour, but that older models emit about 25 gph! EEEEEK. No wonder its been bothering me so bad (or that in the early 1900s the rates of children under 1 dying from pneumonia or bronchitis were so high!)

Okay so for my question, anyone out there use a woodstove or have a recommendation? We're trying to start our research now and any input on what to get (or not to get) would be super appreciated!! :)

  • We live in a house that was built in the 20s and the wood stove is the only source of heat in our house. I don't have any recs on what kind to get but I will tell you that we have a humidifier/air purifier in DS room to help with all of those issues. BTW

Could you get someone who works on fireplaces to look at it?  Maybe the flue just needs cleaned.  ( not sure what it is called on a woodstove)

  • I'd have a chimney sweep come and look at it and clean it (something you should do every year, or at least every other) our wood stove was a hand-me-down and it works great. we have a cast iron kettle we fill with water to help with the dryness. and
  • We have an Englander wood stove. It is an american made stove that is relatively inexpensive. We have it hooked into our cold duct work (so it's not a fire hazard). It is in our basement with the proper chimney out of the house extended above the roof. We

  • I can't recommend a stove, ours came with the house. We cut our own wood, so it's super cheap, but as PPs said, very dry. We used the pot on the stove trick (with sliced orange, cloves and cinnamon stick), but when the baby came we got a cool mist humidif
