Hello Ladies!
As Krwact said on Friday my boys are here! I figured you'd want the scoop on their birth story since it was CRAZY not what I had ever expected.
Short version: Baby A's water broke at
9:15pm Thursday (3/28). Sawyer Douglas was born at 12:40am on Friday
(3/29) weighing 5lb5oz and 17 inches. Silas James was born at 12:41am
weighing 5lb1oz and 19 inches. They were technically born at 33w6d by
only about 45m
Long version: It was discovered on Monday (3/25) that I was 4cm dilated and 80% effaced and contracting regularly. After a 3 day hospital stay I was discharged to home bed rest. After being a VERY good girl and laying completely flat all day I got up to go pee and felt literally what felt like a water balloon bursting in my back. Thank goodness I was already on the toilet because it wasn't just a gush, it was a flood. I yelled for MH to "get sh!t together, my water just broke". He was ready and grabbed all the bags and me in one trip to the car and we were off.
I wasn't contracting so I wasn't worried, MH on the other hand, drove like a bat out of hell to get to the hospital. They met me with a wheelchair and took me to a delivery room where upon standing I lost probably what was left of Baby A's AF. Literally it hit my shoes faster than I could even flip them off. Oh well I was gowning up anyway.
5m later I started contracting every 4m, then 3m, then 2m, then 1m then they were constant. I had a scheduled RCS mind you so I knew absolutely NOTHING about how to deal with labor. I screamed for the better part of an hour. I begged and pleaded and cursed and prayed and you name it I tried it to get the pain to stop. At one point a nurse grabbed me by my shoulders and SHOOK me and yelled "RACHEL! LISTEN TO ME! You're losing it! It's not going to stop hurting just because you scream louder. The only thing you can control is your breathing. 3 in 3 out that's all you can do." It was EXACTLY what I needed. I looked at MH who was hysterical himself and said "She totally just told me what's what didn't she?" then we all laughed. I did my best to get my breathing under control until they could give me the spinal in the OR. Instant relief. O.M.G.
Once the spinal was administered things went really quickly. I'd say within 10m I heard the first cry. Sawyer Douglas (Baby A) came into this world at 12:40am after 3 attempts. MH said he fought the OB to stay inside and every time she'd pull him out he'd slip right back inside until finally she grabbed him by the feet and I heard her say "Well fine, we can do it this way" and he came out butt first. I couldn't see a thing because of the sheet but I could hear his little whimpers and knew he was alright. Just as I was realizing that was MY baby crying Silas James (Baby was born a minute later at 12:41am. He came out screaming. I can only assume because he was furious with his brother for getting them both evicted from their sweet sweet bachelor pad.
I still couldn't see them but Daddy was standing right next to me with the video camera crying his eyes out with a huge smile on his face so I knew they were okay. A minute or so later they weighed them directly next to my head and I was able to see my sweet babies all bundled up together. Love at first sight is real. Sawyer was 5lb5oz and 17 inches and Silas was 5lb1oz and 19 inches.
They immediately left for the NICU as Silas was having a hard time breathing while crying. They both are on nasal cannula CPAPs with room air and the occasional O2 boost when they get fussy. Tomorrow will be Day 1 of feeding them my pumped colostrum and the nurses have warned us to expect some breathing regression since we are going to engage another body system that will require extra oxygen, but there shouldn't be any dangers. The NICU is a wonderful place, so peaceful and quiet, despite being surrounded by little babies it's always very private feeling.
I'm recovering well. They removed my IV and catheter within 12hrs postop so I could get up and take care of myself. Pain management without the IV has been a little difficult but nothing will motivate you to get out of bed like knowing they will be changing your baby's diaper in 20m and you don't want to miss it.
While it certainly wasn't the delivery of my dreams, and I certainly never wanted them in NICU, things happened the way they were meant to. My water broke, and that's about as natural a speed as you can get. So! Without further adieu here are my sweet boys:
Sawyer Douglas, 5lb5oz, 17" long, blonde as can be like his daddy!
Silas James, 5lb1oz, 19" long, dark blonde like his mommy!
I have more photos but I don't have my camera cable so these are just what I have on my cell. I'm planning to go down later today and use my mediocre photo skills to take a few sweet ones so I'll totally AW them later
Thank you for all your support ladies!! I can't wait to see all of your babies in the coming months!! XOXO
Re: XP: Sawyer & Silas' Birth story (Long w/ PIPS)
We lost our first (EDD 07/23/12) after finding out at 12 weeks there was no longer a heartbeat. Our rainbow was born 05/22/13 and was worth all we went through.
