VBAC

I'm going to do it- Update

After consulting with high risk doc and the midwife on Wed, DH & I decided a VBAC was what we wanted to do, even if it meant changing providers and hospitals at 33 weeks. Then, last night I started having really bad stabbing pains all the way around my midsection that were diffuse and relentless and located pretty high up (between ribs & belly button). The pain wasn't timeable and didn't stop. Called the nurse line, they had me come to L&D. About 30 minutes after being admitted, started having timeable contractions, every 3-5 min, 30 seconds each. They ran a bunch of labs, ends up I have a UTI- they know my medical history so started fluids & IV antibiotics ASAP. Pain & contractions cleared up within 1-2 hours, now just waiting to recheck labs this afternoon.

The dilemma for me now, is after this scare, I don't know how comfortable I am changing providers/hospitals.  DD1 was preemie due to pre-e and now this, I'm just worried about starting with new provider, a midwife at a teaching hospital, who doesn't know me. I love my OB, love the hospital, but she will not do a VBAC in any situation and I want to TOL more than anything. I can't believe how hard a decision this has been been & I just don't know which way to go. If I do the planned RCS, I know I will forever regret never having a TOL but should anything go wrong between now & delivery I'm hesitant about going to the midwife & new hospital.

What would some of you do in this position? How would you balance your desire for a VBAC with comfort of provider/hospital?

  • After having my vbac, I'd totally switch!  I'm sure the new hospital is perfectly capable of dealing if something unexpected happens.  They have a NICU?  If it's a teaching hospital, I'm sure it's probably pretty updated with newest tech

  • Take your records with you when you meet with the new MW and talk about all your concerns from your last pregnancy, etc. It would be worth it to me to switch to someone who does support VBAC, no question.

  • As soon as I was discharged yesterday we went & toured L&D at the VBAC friendly hospital (it's literally next door). The nurses were great, yes the L&D suites weren't as posh but they were nice. After my little overnight, during which I never
