   24 hours of a fever (I don't know if you guys had one) 
  
  And as long as they look and seem to feel healthy and energized.  Without a lot of outward symptoms of other kinds like a runny nose or coughing.

  Ear infections are not contagious. If he had a cold that preceded the ear infection, then I'd wait until his symptoms are mostly clear.
