Pumping to induce labour

I am a soon to be FTM. I am at 41 weeks today and am thinking about using a breast pump to try to induce labour. Has anyone used this technique to induce labour? I know it can be a long shot and baby most likely won't come until ready, but I'm really wanting to go into labour before I have to be medically induced? Also, if I pump and colostrum comes out, would this leave less colostrum for baby when born? Or would/could it harm our nursing relationship in any way?
Any input would be great. Thank you :

Re: Pumping to induce labour

  • Colostrum will be produced until after the baby is born and your milk is signaled to come in, so don't worry about taking any if you pump now.

I can't weigh in from personal experience, but I know well that any induction method at home won't wor

  • Thank you for your suggestions and advice. My doctor is letting me go until April 2, so I do have some time. I haven't felt any other signs that my body is gearing up for labour. No mucus plug or timeable contractions, etc. I do know that baby is anterior
  • Pumping/nipple stimulation definitely helped jump start my labor!

It's not likely that lots of colostrum will come out because the breast needs a combination of suction and compression for it to flow. If it does come out though, that's grea

  • How are you doing?  That's great the baby is anterior, otherwise I would suggest some positioning techniques. Walking is good, but also keep napping when you can in case labor starts in the night.  It really won't be long!
  • Thank you all for your encouragement! I am still waiting and trying to stay positive that this will naturally happen over the weekend. I did try the breast pump. I did have some colostrum so
I'm hoping breast will continue making more. Other than th
  • I did this as a last ditch effort the night before my scheduled induction at 41w6d and it did nothing but give me cramps and sore nipples which made breastfeeding moe painful. My opinion is that it's a crap shoot...
  • Honestly, I think the only thing that is some science behind it as far as inducing labor is sex and maybe walking. But even those won't help f baby isn't ready.

  • My doula and prenatal teacher both advised against nipple stimulation to bring on labour as they said it could bring on VERY painful but not very productive contractions.

  • A good friend of mine is an OB and she has used nipple stim during both her labors to get things going.  Granted, this was when she was already IN labor, but she swears by it.  My water broke at 36w 2d and there was NO sign of labor.  The n
