Natural Birth

FTM natural, med free birth story!

I started having contractions at 10:00am on March 18th (My due date was March 23rd).  When they started they weren't bad and were about every 12 minutes.  I really wasn't sure if they were real since I had had braxton hicks on and off for a few days.  I went and fed my horses, did stalls and set up my barn for my mom just in case it was real.  By 10:30 or so they were starting to hurt a bit more then braxton hicks.  So I hung around the house reading and catching up on some stuff on the computer. DH was at work so I had texted him at 10:00am and told him I "might" be in labor.  I talked to him again at 12:00 noon and told him I was pretty sure it was real but still couldn't guarantee it! At this point they were 6-7 minutes apart and lasting about 40 seconds.  So at 1:15pm I decided I better get in the shower.  Not really thinking about the fact that my contraction app on the phone wouldn't do me any good in the shower! haha! So I was in there for about 30 minutes and had stopped timing the contractions.  When I got out I text DH that I thought he should come home.  A little after 2 pm he came home and at that point I thought the contractions were about every 5 minutes, he informed me they were closer then that when he timed a few.  We left for the hospital at 2:30, got there around 3.  I kept asking him the whole way up if he was going to be upset if they sent me home.  I was so worried that I wouldn't be in real labor and they would send me home.  When we got there they hooked me up to a monitor, the baby (we hadn't found out if it was a girl or boy) was doing great and I was having contractions about every 4 minutes but more intense.  When they checked me I was 5cm and 100% and the baby was 0 station.  So they admitted me.  We walked the halls for probably an hour maybe two. They monitored us every 30 minutes.  Then I asked to get in the tub so they got that ready and checked me again.  I was SO upset because I was still only 5 cm.  I got in the tub, DH says we were only in there for 45 minutes or so, it felt like forever to me!  The worst part of the whole process was when my water broke in the tub!  Then I was in a lot of pain and the nurse came in and told me I had to get out of the tub, but I was in the middle of a contraction and I couldn't even uncurl myself enough to stand up, so DH basically picked me up out of the tub and handed me to the nurse! That part was AWFUL! But by the time I got out of the tub the contraction was over and I walked down the hall to the delivery room.  When I got there they checked me again and I was 10 cm and ready to push.  At that point I was scared! And my mid-wife wasn't there yet, but they told me it was ok to push if I needed to.  A few contractions later the midwife got there.  The baby was really low and they kept telling me I didn't have far to push.  So it was about quarter after 7 and the mid-wife assured me we would have our baby by 7:45pm.  I pushed for about 20 minutes and my baby BOY was born at 7:34pm.  He weighed 7lbs. 5oz. and was 19" long.  I had to have an episiotomy so that part of the healing has been painful but everything else was great.  I had no medication (I didn't even get a Motrin until the next morning for some cramping) so I had no lingering effects of any meds.  My baby nursed right away and was very awake and active.  His APGAR scored were great 8 and 9 , and we are doing very well!

I wouldn't have had my labor go any other way and plan to have any future babies the same way!

My DH was amazed that while they were stitching up my episiotomy I asked the mid-wife if the second one would be easier! :) He said he can't imagine anyone going through that and still thinking of doing it again so soon!

To anyone considering natural birth I highly recommend it! :)
