XP From PAIF - Pet Owners Please Come In!

So the weather is finally warming up and I know it is time for my animals to have their Flea and tick prevention - however being pregnant this year I wanted to see what you ladies thought.

Frontline Plus, Advantage, and K-9 Advantix are the three popular brands out there and I'm pretty sure I've used them all at one time or another.

Here's where my pregnancy related question comes in - The K-9 claims to be the only one that does fleas, ticks, and mosquitoes but says that due to the chemicals in it they recommend children avoid the animals for a few days. So do you think its safe for me to be around my dogs if I give them the K-9?

Or should I just stick with one of the other two, but don't work against mosquitoes? Last year we had them pretty bad and I could always see them around my dogs (who are primarily inside dogs but we do all chill in the backyard together).

Since it's Friday (tomorrow) my OB clinic is closed and I am positive they would not answer this question anyway. Hopefully some of you ladies can shed some light or offer your opinions.

ETA - I have two Afghan Hounds so they're not lap dogs but they do like to lay near me and ask for lots of attention if that makes any difference in your advice!

  • I got my husband to give it, then just made sure to wash my hands a lot until it dried.

  • My husband is a vet (and I am in the field as well), and we use Trifexis for our dog.  It is a pill, so there is no chemical residue.  It doesn't work against mosquitoes, but it has heartworm prevention in it as well as flea control.  It

  • Thanks! I'll ask my vet about that tomorrow. We do have a lot of ticks in this area so as long as that offers good protection that may be our safest bet!

  • Is the K9 monthly? If so, I don't think the chemical residue is worth the mosquito protection. If it's not safe for kids I would be nervous about handling it while pregnant, and it's not like you can administer it and then just wash your hands, you'd h

  • huh. I didn't even THINK of this with my parents cats. they have collars that leave dust all over them... I should look into the safety of that for when they're at my parents house.

  • We use Trifexis as well. The younger dog doesn't really like to take it, and by doesn't like to take it, I mean it pretty much has to be shoved down his throat or he'll spit it out and the older one will eat it because he thinks it's a treat.  But i

  • I usually just wear gloves (like the type doc's wear) when applying it and then just make sure I do not touch the wet area.

  • The cost varies from one vet to the next, but average would be about $70-$90 for a 6-month supply.  It is an oral pill given once monthly. Big Smile
