Toe Walking - Autism

For those of you who had a child with autism that toe walked, do you remember when it started?

Our 10 month has started to toe walk.  I know this can be common in babies learning to walk, however coupled with some other red flag things I am seeing and the fact that my other two boys both have autism.... well I feel like we are just working our way towards a diagnosis, one little red flag at a time. Sad

Re: Toe Walking - Autism

  • My son didn't walk unassisted until he was 15 months, we saw toe-walking right away I believe. By 18 months it was enough to alarm our day care provider.

  • He walked at ten months and did what we thought was the normal tiptoe stage. Noticed him doing it regularly around sixteen months. Still does it now at just after two, especially when stressed.

  • My little guy walked at 7 1/2 months but never toe walked.  He picked it up for a while right around his 2nd birthday and occasionally does it but not all the time.  Sorry I can't be more helpful.

  • My son walked at 9 months, but didn't start tie walking until 2 or so. Now at 3.5 he will do it all the time.
  • DD has AS and she learned to walk at 9 months and has pretty much been toe walking since. She mainly toe walks when she's nervous. She's nearly 13.

  • I may not be of much help, My DS who is on ASD never toe walks. My niece who is typical toe walks. So, I hope it doesn't mean anything in your child's case.

  • Thanks for all the responses.  I am going to keep my eye on this.  We will have appointments in January with his primary pediatrician and with a Dev. Ped. that we are completing a research study with.  Until then, I am just going to try to not be neurotic! Smile

  • DS1 is PPDNOS and at 4 he still sometimes toe walks. He did it much more when he was younger.

DS2 is 2 and toe walks almost all the time For the longest time I thought for sure he was going to have issues because it was a huge red flag for me. The Dr. and his OT tell me it is just him sensory seeking. This is his only "flag" as he is typical is every other way.

  • My ds didn't walk until 14 months, the toe walking started when he started walking and it was only when he was wandering around, he didn't run on his toes or toe walk when he was on a mission to get to somewhere or something
  • Hello parents!
I am a student of physical therapy in upstate New York. And I am currently researching a way to create a simple foot orthotic for patients with autism that would stimulate the patients heel, allowing them to adopt a more typical walking pattern. This could work for all ages, although it would not work for children that toe walk because of hypersensitivity. I was just hoping to get some feedback, attached is a survey and if you would like to complete it or tell me any more about your experiences with toe walking that would be wonderful!

Thanks again, any feedback is truly appreciated! And if you live around the Ithaca or Boston area and would be interesting in participating in a study you may contact me at insertheals@yahoo.com
