One more preschool question

This is probably a dumb question and I'm sure it varies from place to place, but does your child have to be at least 3 years old before they attend preschool? DS turns 3 in January. If I called around to see about starting him in September would that be normal? He'll start kindergarten when he's 5 turning 6 so to me it makes sense.

  • DS' preschool has different programs starting at 18 months.  For the 3 year old program, they have to be PT'd

  • Hmm ok. The public elementary school is right down the street from us and would be my first choice but I've been all over their website and the county's and still can't find a thing about actual registration. I would rather avoid most of the combined p

  • I started DD1 at age 3.  Her preschool has many different options for 3 year olds.  They have an option for 2.5 year olds (have to be 2 in March --- before school starts), but it is only for 2 hours, twice a week.

  • Not much around here if the kid isn't 3 by September (and potty-trained in many cases). We did a co-op program this year that had a 2's class. I work in the class 1 day/week and the other day I leave DD. It's been a good way to ease her into the classroom

  • That's typical here. They want them to be potty trained.
  • Depends on the area. DD2 is in a 2 yo preschool program through the YMCA. She had to be 2 yo before Sept 1, our states cut off. It's twice a week for 1.5 hours.

  • if schools have vacanies mid year they will let you enroll and it's not too uncommon as kids move/switch preschools/job loss means a kid has to stop going. its interesting this doesn't seem tobe the case elsewhere--we interviewed a handful of solely pr

  • I couldn't find a preschool that would take DS under 3 and potty trained.

The exception to that is places like kindercare which is a daycare but calls their 4 and up preschool and pre-K. But I would've had to pay for a PT or FT spot depending on

  • The cut off for most schools in our city is three by Sept 1 or so. DS2 was born mid-October, so he missed by a few weeks. We're sending him to a private preschool for a few days a week this coming school year, and then he'll go to city preschool for two y

  • DD's bday is 12/31 and she started preschool the September before she turned 3. DS will do the same 2.5 y.o. program this fall. I can think of at least four schools within 5 miles of me that have a decent 2 year old preschool program.
