computer-smart people - please come in!

A few years ago, DH and I bought an external hard drive to back up our computer. The software on it sucked, so a friend walked me through re-formatting it, and now I just drag-and-drop everything I want backed up onto it. A few days ago, it stopped working. My computer recognizes it's there, but it tells me I need to reformat it to use it. Is there any way to salvage the stuff I already have saved on there? There are a few docs on there that I don't have saved on our computer, and I really don't want to lose them! Please help!

In case it's helpful: We have a Dell computer, running Windows 7 Home Premium. The hard drive is an HP. We've been using this computer/hard drive combo for about a year and a half, and the hard drive is about 4 years old.

    If it is asking you to reformat it then it can't read the file system on the hard drive. This is not good. 

    This is an issue that would have to be looked at in person and not really over the internet because it

    This happened to me and my husband last year, and due to other computers also failing we realized that the videos that were taken of our wedding were only on this specific hard drive  oops.  DH works with computers, so he knew what was
