weird question for breastfeeders

sfm: weird question for breastfeeders

So- I'm a physician assistant and do well children/well baby checks and something got me thinking the other day--- When I walk into a room and a mom is breast feeding she automatically pops the baby off and covers up- instantaneous.  I've never had a mom continue to breastfeed.  So I always say, "oh, don't mind me- keep feeding your baby"- and most will relatch but some won't.  But when I go to DS's appt and have to feed DS, I don't unlatch him when the Doc walks in because I figured we'd talk first and I'd rather have DS quiet.

What do you do and why?  Just curious. Also- Is it better that I tell the mom's to keep feeding or just ignore it?

Re: weird question for breastfeeders

  • If I don't know who is coming in, I cover up. If someone comes in announced and isn't going to actually need my baby, I'd keep on keepin' on. I'd appreciate being told it's fine to continue.

I've unlatched/covered when someone came in suddenly

  • Its only happened to me once. Typically though we walk in, they get weight and measurement right away and then we normally only wait for the Dr. for about 5 maybe 10 min. I try to feed him before we go so I don't have to worry about it.

  • I don't unlatch or cover up. I just keep nursing. Most of the time, ds speed eats if he knows someone is in the room, so he's done in like 1 minute!

  • In the doctor's office, I already use a cover even if no one is in there yet, because I know they might arrive any time.

I keep BFing until they actually need to see the baby. If I'm BFing, the doctor usually goes over the discussion part of the

  • I try to make my appts early and I feed him after his shots, in the room. I've had a nurse or two walk in, but I've never unlatched him. He just keeps eating like NBD.

I would tell them to continue to feed. You don't want them to think they ca

  • If I'm feeding when the nurse walks in I keep feeding.  She usually says "don't worry, keep feeding. Just meet me out here with the baby in their diaper for weighing and measuring."  I always have a cover or a light blanket over me.  LO usu

  • Well, we've spent a lot of time at doctors and specialist offices. If I'm nursing I keep on nursing. But because of weight gain issues and the fact that I need to give lo mostly bottles, I have also been in the position of pumping in the room quite a few
  • I usually try to feed DD before we go to the appt.  Or at least "top her off" before we go .

I don't use a cover either.  I find that the cover draws attention to what I'm doing.  I usually wear a nursing cami with anot

  • We drive an hour for Carson's appointments, so I usually try to feed him before we leave and right away after shots. In the first few months when he nursed around the clock I tried to unlatch when someone came in because I figured the sooner the exam was

  • Our pedi talks before she does his exam so I just keep feeding him until she needs to put him on the table. I do think it's nice that you tell the moms just to keep feeding their babies. I have had some nurses get annoyed if I'm bfing when they come in

  • i always keep feeding.  i'm surprised that this isn't the norm you've experienced.  i also will nurse instantly after shots, with the nurse standing there.  i've never thought twice about it.
