1st Trimester

Does my OB NOT know what she's doing? 3 subjects inside!

Hi! I am currently 8 weeks pregnant with our third child. I have a few concerns about my OB and pregnancy & I wanted to speak with other pregnant mothers as well.  With my previous pregnancies, I did experience morning sickness, however it has NEVER been this extreme. I constantly feel weak and sick. I even had to leave a new job, unfortunately, because I felt physically unable to stand for prolonged periods of time. I expressed my concerns with my OB (which is a new OB, not the OB who delivered my first two children) and she said that it will only get worse over the next week. She is making it out to be normal, but it doesn't feel normal to me at all. I understand that each pregnancy is different, but I felt that she could have explained more to me. Also, she prescribed Zofran to help with my sickness, but I expressed to her that I did not feel 100%taking medication during my pregnancy. She assured me that it was safe. However, I went on to ask her if there is anything natural I can eat/drink/take to help with my discomfort, and she told me that there isn't. I understand that she is a doctor and is in the market to write prescriptions, but this is not something I am happy with. I had blood drawn at the appointment to check on my health, so I should be getting those results soon. In the meantime, is there any natural option you mamas can suggest?

Secondly, I have had the suspicion that I could possibly be carrying twins. Being that I have been so ill, I figured that I could be. Neither me or my fiance have a history of twins in our families, though. But I will say, when I had the ultrasound completed at my prenatal appointment, I thought that I saw two babies in there. But the ultrasound technician informed us that it was simply an yok sack, which is the baby's source of food at the moment. Do you believe that it was a yok sack? Or should I try to have another ultrasound done?

Lastly, our pregnancy was not planned, so as soon as I found out that I was pregnant, I immediately scheduled an appointment with my tried & true OB office. However, I have been going back and forth about working with a Midwife instead. Can any of you mamas give me any information on Midwives and how I can go about finding an excellent Midwife in my area? Also, I am not sure if Midwifes exclusively assist with waterbirths, but I have really been considering it. The only downside is that we are currently renting, and I have known of all waterbirths being completed in the family's home. Is waterbirth an option to me still, being that we don't own a house?

THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR READING!

  • As to point one, your OB is right. Every pregnancy is different, and m/s varies wildly for women. Zofran is perfectly safe to take if you're so sick you can't even work. You can try things like ginger and peppermint, but if you are that sick, Zofran's

  • If you are so sick you can't even work, Zofran is the way to go.  There are natural remedies, but again, if you are that ill, they most likely won't work for you.  If you are that concerned about being all natural, go to a naturopath.

  • I am sorry to say but there isnt much that will help with MS naturally... alot of traditional natural remedies are harmful to pregnancies... I tried the peppermint tea thing.. made it worse for me. I would try the zofran. ....

  • At the end of the day you need to feel comfortable with your health care provider.  Your OB went through college, four years of med school and at least 4 years of residency so the do know what they are doing.  If you don't like them try someone

  • How about planning, financially, for twins (since you are convinced that is what you are carrying), then using the money as a buffer when it turns out to be one baby? It sounds like you need to be creating a financial safety net, anyway.

As for #3, just an FYI- your health insurance may not even cover a midwife. Mine doesn't. Even if it does, it may not cover a homebirth since the fact that they do not have everyone at your hou

  • I'd trust the OB. Hands down. But honestly, if you had a "tried and true OB", why change offices? And why the sudden interest in midwives? I would stick with the OB I'm comfortable with. There was a reason you had that OB deliver 2 of your, soon to be 3 c

  • Ok I half agree with most people on this post but I do think there needs to be a little balance.

You need to be able to fully trust your OB. So if you feel the issue is with your OB go to a new one either go back to your old one if possible

Everyone else already covered the ms issue.

For what it's worth on my first ultrasound (6wks) the baby and the yolk sac look exactly the same to me.  The trained professional explained the difference, but I can't see it.  They both look

Thanks for some of your answers. Most of you have been complete assholes otherwise.

  • I believe most of this advice is spot on. I am seeing a midwife but she is a certified nurse midwife. My insurance covers those but not certified public midwives. There's a big difference. I do think it may be best for you to look into one if you can, bec
