Working Moms

plans for daycare money!

Just something fun, based on the post below about how much we all spend in daycare.  What do you plan to do with the money you spend on daycare once your LO's are out of daycare?

We're going to finish our basement!  I'm so excited  The plan is to work with a designer and really make a space that works for us.

  • This is a great question! To be honest, I've always assumed that when we were done with DC, we wouldn't net that much more , because activities, clothes, toys, etc, would start costing more. But, if that's not the case, then that has me very excited!

  • Yeah, we'll probably just reallocate the money to camps during the summer or spring break, or eventually a babysitter when my FIL is no longer able to do so much free babysitting, clothes, activities, etc.  We'll still be using some to pay for before

  • Private school and after-care until 6pm when I can get out and pick him up.  I'm SO far away from this though.

If it was just fun, I would save up for some travel (Patagonia is at the top of my list right now) and to buy an apartment.

  • Extra retirement savings, but I'm still not convinced that we will have all that much "extra". I don't know much about older kids yet, but from looking at what my friends' and coworkers' kids do in terms of extracurricular activities and the stuff that th

  • Use it to pay for our second child who will be here by then, LOL.  But in general, after they are both done, we will probably try to save a lot of it, take family vacations, and use it towards our plans to build a new home.

I never understood the line of thought that you don't really save the money because it'll be allocated to other activities/items for the child.  Right now I pay $570/month for PT daycare for DS.  I don't spend $570/month on anything for mysel

  • We're behind on retirement (thanks, grad school) so we'll increase that quite a bit. We will also increase the amount we currently send monthly to our 529 college savings. If there is still significant savings I would like to reduce my hours to part-time,

  • Sadly, after some very early research it looks like the cost of before and after school care is going to run damn close to what we pay for daycare so we're kissing that money goodbye for the duration :(

  • This is something I dream about... since I have 5 years (at least) before no kids are in DC it will be a while. But when my oldest isn't in DC anymore, and if #3 isn't here yet, I'm going to use the extra $700 a month to pay down/off one or both of the

  • We used to take a great vacation every other year with my step-kids (fun road trips to cool destinations), but we had to call a halt to that for the time-being.  When G is a little older, I'd like to get back into doing that.   Otherwise

  • After school programs, extracurricular programs like sports or art, or just spending more to do family activities since kids will be of age.
  • With paying private school tuition, some after school care and care over the summers it will really end up being a wash.  Add in the money for lunches, field trips, uniforms, sports, music lessons, etc. and we'll be spending more money than w

  • I had DS when DD was in 1st grade. We went from paying ~12K/year for daycare to ~6K/year for after school/summer camps. We threw that 6K at 2 student loans I had and then paid them off in full.

Then when DS was born we started spending the money

  • We'll spend about half what we spend now for before and after care. I'll take some of that and use it towards a new car payment. The rest will go towards college savings.

  • Like some PP's said, we'll probably have to reallocate to other childcare for before and after school and summer camps.  If we have some leftover, I'd like to increase our contributions to their college savings accounts.
