2nd Trimester

When to take leave?

I found out today that my maternity leave will be paid at 75% of my regular salary! So I'm trying to firgure out when I should start my leave, I get up to 26 weeks (13 at 75%, 13 at 50% salary), I'm due at the end of June, but I'm high risk because my baby has a heart defect that will require surgery within a week of birth. I also commute about an hour to work, 2 hours total each day. My job also requires me to be on my feet about 40% of my day, I normally work about 45 hours a week.

I know my doctor's will advise me, but does anyone have any thoughts?

Re: When to take leave?

  • With DS, I planned to work up until the end, at a job that involved lots of travel, but I was really miserable in the last 6 weeks and ended up stopping about 2-3 weeks before my due date.  Some people feel fine up until the very end.  Since it

  • I am on my feet 100% of the time and work 40 hours a week. I usually work until my due date or I go into labor. I like to save all my leave for after the baby comes. That being said, I am not high risk, but if there were any issues, then I would just foll

  • I'm not high-risk, so I'm sure you'll need more time, but I'll be starting my leave 7 days before my due date. I get a weeks vacay, and then be on a LOA after that. I'm actually taking 6 months off, I'm very lucky to be able to do this. Then again, my inc

  • You may find that it isn't really a choice you get to make.  You should talk with your HR department because generally, you have to have a medical reason to be out of work - either an issue preventing you from working until your due date or actually

  • I plan on asking my doctor soon. I work almost an hour from my hospital (shhh, that's my travel max) so there's a REALLY good chance they'd try to force me to go to another hospital. Mainly, the one I work for lol.

  • What would happen if you planned to begin your leave July 1st (It's a Monday, assuming you are due right at the end of June) and yet you ended up having your baby a week early?  Would you be penalized for taking leave earlier than you said you would?

  • Since you're getting 26 weeks (which is awesome compared to my 6 weeks) and you have a high risk pregnancy with a long commute and long hours on your feet I would start prior to having the baby.  I'm not sure how far before your EDD you should start

  • I plan to work right up to the birth if possible! I have a little over a weeks PTO & that's it the rest of the time will be unpaid. So I need to work as much & as long as possible. If I can't, I can't, but will try unless doc tells me otherwise!&n

  • I plan on working until the very end but my company pays nothing for maternity leave so I am using vacation and PTO time. "/

  • Are those numbers your maternity leave only? If you are high risk, you may very well qualify for disability, which is different from maternity leave in most states. Whatever your feelings of wanting spend as much time with your baby after giving birth,

  • It pretty much is your choice within reason. Most people I know just tell their ob when they want their end date to be. I went out two weeks enforce and was glad I did because it only ended up being less than a week. That was just enough time to clean up

  • This may be true. I'm mobile so I don't know where you guys live. The only way to know is like you said...talk to HR. I would also talk to ob. He/she is the one who writes you out.

  • Now with a high risk situation you might want to have Plan A and Plan B, and it also depends on your work. As you say if you're on your feet a lot and work that many hours, be prepared to be pulled by your doc.

I have a mostly desk job, and my pr
