Toddlers: 24 Months+

Transition to a toddler bed XP

Hi! I'm just wondering when you moved your LO into a toddler bed and why you chose to do it then? Are there any specific signs I should look for, to judge if she's ready or not?

A little about my DD. She will be 16months old on April 2nd, and she is a very independent little thing. She is and always has been a phenomenal sleeper. It's very rare that she will fight bedtime/nap time or throw a tantrum, she just curls up and goes to sleep (a solid 12hours at night and 2 solid naps during the day). In the morning she wakes up and plays/chitter chatters for about 30mins before screaming for me. About a month ago she started getting herself up on the couches and lately has become really good at getting up and back down (about 2ft) by herself.

We're expecting another in June but he will be in our room with us for the first 5-6 months. We would be converting DD's crib into the toddler bed, but I think I would use one of the mesh/padded bed guards instead of the little wooden one that goes with the crib because the mesh one is much longer (leaving only about a foot, maybe 2, open at the end) and DD still moves around a lot in her sleep. We also keep her door closed at all times when she is sleeping. I'm planning to get a Foscam video camera so either way I won't transition her until that is installed.

Any advice would be awesome!

Re: Transition to a toddler bed XP

  • The only reason we went to the toddler bed at 23 mos was because she was climbing out and hurting herself. However, she's a sleep fighter, and the only reason she was napping was because she was pinned in her crib. She hasn't napped since the transition.

We started to move my son at around 18 months he was fully in a real bed by 23 months.  We wanted to move him before my DD was born.  We were moving him out of the nursery as well, so we just set his new room up and started reading playing in hi

  • Your DD sounds a lot like my DS, sleep wise, and we moved him at 15 months because we had DD coming. He actually moved to a queen bed and box springs on the floor though, with bed rails. He transitioned just fine and really hasn't had any problems. He's s

  • We moved him over about a month before he turned 3. We moved him because he asked to go into a big boy bed. So we did. That night. We never had a single issue & I'm sure it's because he was ready for the change and not because we did it on our

    Hi clizh!

We're not moving DD into a toddler bed until she's three, unless she starts climbing out. She is also an amazing sleeper and if it ain't broke, don't fix it, KWIM? I'm not about to start presenting her with the idea that hey, you're

  • DD went to a toddler bed right before she turned 3.  She was doing ok in her crib, no climbing out or fussing, but we went on vacation and she slept in a bed, so we decided when we came home to make her crib to the toddler bed.  She is very g

  • Personally I wouldn't move her until she learns to climb out on her own.  Ours did at 22 months and she is tall and very strong.  We transitioned to a toddler bed that same day.  It will be easier for you not to make the transition sooner t

  • I moved DS at about 26 months.  He never made an attempt to crawl out of his crib, but there were a couple days in a row where insisted on sleeping in the guest bed.  I put him in there for a nap, thinking it wasn't going to last long and that h
  • Her crib converted so it's not like we ran out and bought something right away. She took to it right away. I also wanted to do it because we need the crib back anyway, lol. I don't think there's a definitive right answer, but you don't necessarily have to

  • Our independent little guy never did well in a crib, so he slept in a twin bed pretty much since the beginning.... we moved when he was about one and never set up the crib in the new house. I'm not sure that would work for everyone, but you mentioned t
