Parenting after 35

My youngest is 18 and I'm pregnant again!

Hi everyone. I have an 18 year old son from my first marriage, who will be graduating this year and heading off to college. I have since remarried and my husband and I just found out that we are expecting. It is exciting for both of us, as we thought we would never have children of our own.

Anyone else experience such a large gap in between pregnancies? And I am also looking for suggestions on how to tell my son he is  going to be a big brother [:

  • First, congratulations!!

Second, yes I have that large of a gap between my two girls. Last year I had DD2 in February and then in June DD1 graduated high school and in August she moved away to college. I don't think there needs to be any special "way" to tell your son. You just tell him.  We had to go to an RE so my daughter knew we were trying and was just as excited as we were when we found out I was pregnant. But if it had been a surprise I would have just come out and told her.

  • Same scenario for a childhood friend of mine.   She has a 4 year old and a 22-year old son from her first marriage.

I do think it all depends on the relationship you and your SO have with your older son.  If it's good and healthy, there's no reason to sugar-coat it or try to soften the blow, so to speak.  Just flat-out tell him, and he'll probably be as thrilled as you are.

But if you have a bit of a difficult relationship, I'd probably tread a little lightly so he doesn't react negatively.   18 can be such a tricky age sometimes!

  • I don't have any advice, because I just had my first at 37, but a friend of mine recently went through this.  Fortunately, her older kids handled the news well.  Congrats and good luck.

Also, there is a Pregnant After 35 board too, where you might find some other women in your situation.  Here's the link to that board:  https://community.thebump.com/cs/ks/forums/4615072/ShowForum.aspx

My boys were 14 and 17 when my girls were born.  It's been a wonderful experience for all of us.  It's wonderful to watch my boys with the girls and they are actually a big help.

My husband and I told the boys together at dinner one night when I was about or 10 weeks pregnant. They were fine with it - even the twins news :)

    Good luck

  • Hi!  Yes, I have a 17 year gap between my two kiddos (son is 20 and daughter is 3).  There wasn't any special way I told him about his soon to be sibling - just told him we were expecting.  His big concern was if he still had a room with us.  Once that was covered, then he was okay with it :)

  • I have a 17 year old daughter who will graduate this year, and am 9 months pregnant with my second child... My daughter is really excited about the pregnancy and has actually changed her college plans so that she can stay closer to home and be around to be a part of her baby brother's life as he grows up.

Rachel knew we were trying and what we were trying, so I didn't really do anything incredibly interesting to let her know that we had gotten pg other than showing her the positive test after I showed my hubby. She was super excited and all her friends have been having a heck of a good time with it as well, lol...

  • Hello moms over 35!  I am new to the site/group. I have a rather large gap in age group as well. I have a 20 year old son in college, a 9 year old daughter in the 3rd grade and I am 26w6d.
  • My youngest is 15 (girl) & my oldest is 19 soon to be 20(boy). He is also a sophmore in college. Boys don't really care too much about it.. My daughter is all over me. She is excited & says she plans to do all this stuff with her new sister. - since she is a freshman in high school not sure how long that will last. This is my new husbands first child so its been interesting getting him ready & I had to be refreshed its been so long.

I feel like a first time mother. ....

  • By now I'm sure you've figured out how to tell your son. How did it go?

I'm 42 43 before years end. Had a baby boy last summer and am now 6m preg with my 4th, finally a girl. My first two boys are 20 23 yo. I thought I was done after the 3rd boy, but since everything went do well, something kept telling me he needed a sibling closer in age. Hubby was more than happy! I'm definitely done after this girl : my second marriage too
