restless while nursing?

My little guy is 4 months old today.  He has been very restless for the last week or two while nursing.  He pulls off, relatches, pulls off....over and over again.  It's so frustrating. I feel like he just isn't eating well. Any advice on how to avoid this?

He normally feeds for about 6-7 minutes per side, which is what he's been doing for a couple months.  I've done it this way (timing) because if I let him nurse forever, he was spitting up so much.  The ped said to cut him down because they have a tendency to overeat when they are young.

Am I not letting down fast enough for him?  Is he not getting enough from me?

He seemed fine before even though he was restless but the last couple of days he has been waking very early from naps, then being very cranky so I feed him and he seems to eat well.  So did he not get enough from his prior feed and therefore, it's interrupting his naps because he's hungry?

Any help would be appreciated.

I pump between his first and second feed of the day.  I usually get 3-5 oz.  But I've started feeding him a bottle at his last feeding before bed (to make sure he is getting enough) and I pump (and sometimes get less than 1-2 oz).

  • This is my LO too, she gets distracted by anything (my face, my clothes, any sound) and unlatches to look at it or talk to me. Like PP said, nursing in a quiet/dimmed room helps a little bit. I asked the pedi about this and she said it's normal for this a
  • My LO is formula fed and she has been a distracted eater for the last couple weeks too. I think it's just the age. I find if I give her my finger to play with, aka, bend in every direction it's not supposed to go in, it helps with the distraction.

I agree with others that it could be the four month wakeful distractibility thing.

    Another possibility: I've

Oh and p.s. if we feed him a bottle, he drinks the whole thing without getting distracted, pulling away, etc.
