April 2013 Moms

That was a close one... vent

At my doctor's appt yesterday the nurse finished taking my weight, BP and all that.. then asked me to strip down and told me since I was close enough to 36 weeks that they were going to do the strep culture.

I for one have never heard of it before, I stupidly ask, "Is it just like a throat culture for strep?" She goes, "Well, it's a strep culture, but it's not in your throat." Then she holds up this HUGE q-tip that was like a foot long and tells me what it's for and that it's nothing to worry about....

UMM maybe for a normal pregnancy?? I then tell her I have complete placenta previa and she still was adamant that I was getting it. I asked her if I could refuse it, since I didn't want it to disrupt the placenta since it?s RIGHT on top of my cervix.

She was looking at me like I had two heads and didn?t know what I was talking about. Then kept telling me that it wasn?t anything to be scared of, it?s done all the time, it?s nothing worse than a pap and all this? I started to get upset and told her I wasn?t having it done. She goes ?Well, it?s something that we have to do make sure you don?t pass any bacteria vaginally to the baby.? I then looked at her like SHE?S the one that had two heads and told her ?I have complete P-L-A-C-E-N-T-A P-R-E-V-I-A?. She goes ?But you?re not having a c-section are you?? Seriously?? Aren?t you the one with the schooling?? ?Yes, I?m having a c-section, I can?t deliver vaginally!?

I finally saw a light click in her head and she goes ?Oh, never mind then! You don?t need this!? And threw away the gown she had laid out for me to put on. Um seriously?? I?m not rejecting it because I?m scared! I?m not stupid!

Holy hell? vent over.

  • Yikes.  You really have to be your own advocate sometimes.

Generally, everybody I've dealt with throughout this pregnancy (hospital, classes, hospital tour, Dr office, nurses, etc) has been awesome, but there is ONE nurse at my doctors

  • Yikes...Good for you for sticking to your guns though!
  • I guess in your case you don't need a GBS test (since there's no way you can deliver vaginally), but how did you miss all the posts about it over the past month? There were at least five or six a day about it.

  • My dr's office changed their policy and even c-section moms have to have it done in case they were to go into labor before their c-section. If your water breaks and you have not had the test you automatically get put on antibiotics. I guess they don't wan

  • Well I have no idea if c section moms get it done or not, but she could have at least told you it was an external swab instead of arguing with you and telling you not to worry!

  • They told me today when they did it for me that even with a C-section you had the antibiotics an hour before the procedure or something, if you tested positive. I was surprised as well.

  • Same here - My Dr's office now requires me to get the swab, even though I cannot deliver vaginally.  All C sections have to get it because if it does test positive, they can give the pediatricians a heads up.  I do not even know how that makes s

  • This sounds so similar to my appointment last week. I was seeing a different dr in the the practice so I had a different nurse also. I'm having a csection too so I refused being checked for dilation. The nurse was totally crazy cakes and kept saying we do
  • I understand you don't need it, and I definitely get that the nurse was NOT being helpful in her explanation, but you were way overreacting given what the actual test is. They only swab the outside - they really don't go in at all. I didn't feel a thing w
  • My OB office requires it for csections, too. I'm having mine next week. Like PPs said, it really does not go up far at all. I remember it being so fast and I barely noticed her doing it.
