At my doctor's appt yesterday the nurse finished taking my weight, BP and all that.. then asked me to strip down and told me since I was close enough to 36 weeks that they were going to do the strep culture.
I for one have never heard of it before, I stupidly ask, "Is it just like a throat culture for strep?" She goes, "Well, it's a strep culture, but it's not in your throat." Then she holds up this HUGE q-tip that was like a foot long and tells me what it's for and that it's nothing to worry about....
UMM maybe for a normal pregnancy?? I then tell her I have complete placenta previa and she still was adamant that I was getting it. I asked her if I could refuse it, since I didn't want it to disrupt the placenta since it?s RIGHT on top of my cervix.
She was looking at me like I had two heads and didn?t know what I was talking about. Then kept telling me that it wasn?t anything to be scared of, it?s done all the time, it?s nothing worse than a pap and all this? I started to get upset and told her I wasn?t having it done. She goes ?Well, it?s something that we have to do make sure you don?t pass any bacteria vaginally to the baby.? I then looked at her like SHE?S the one that had two heads and told her ?I have complete P-L-A-C-E-N-T-A P-R-E-V-I-A?. She goes ?But you?re not having a c-section are you?? Seriously?? Aren?t you the one with the schooling?? ?Yes, I?m having a c-section, I can?t deliver vaginally!?
I finally saw a light click in her head and she goes ?Oh, never mind then! You don?t need this!? And threw away the gown she had laid out for me to put on. Um seriously?? I?m not rejecting it because I?m scared! I?m not stupid!
Holy hell? vent over.
Re: That was a close one... vent
Yikes. You really have to be your own advocate sometimes.
Generally, everybody I've dealt with throughout this pregnancy (hospital, classes, hospital tour, Dr office, nurses, etc) has been awesome, but there is ONE nurse at my doctors
I guess in your case you don't need a GBS test (since there's no way you can deliver vaginally), but how did you miss all the posts about it over the past month? There were at least five or six a day about it.
For the record, they don't stick the
