Headed for Back Labour?

Hey mamas, at yesterday's 37 week appointment my midwife palpated baby girl and said that she is head down, face up and unless I could get her to flip to face down by pushing on my belly and using gravity (etc.) I was headed for back labour.  She then said that it was excruciating, it prolonged labour, and it usually called for c-section, forceps or a vacuum extraction.  Indifferent

I'm doing all I can physically to encourage her to roll over but I'm wondering if any S+TMs experienced back labour and did you find anything that helped with the pain or with your L/D?  Or, if there are mamas out there that have successfully turned their LO around, I'd love to hear from you too!  TIA!

  • Babies can turn at any time.  I haven't delivered a sunny side up baby, but I recommend epis.  Mine was great. I've known plenty of people who have delivered sunny side up babies without c-section, forcepts or vacuum.

  • I haven't heard anything about the c-section, forceps or vacuum with back labor. I have heard different positions while in labor can help, but that it can depend on your hospital or practicioner's practice as to how encouraging/willing they are in the use
  • Thanks for the helpful advice ladies, I hadn't considered a chiropractor - I'll definitely look into that as well as alternative birthing positions.  Hoping your premonition is wrong K&JPgh :)
  • I had back labor with DS.  I was induced with pitocin at 40 weeks and DS was 8 pounds 6ounces. We knew he was sunny side up and OB never mentioned any concerns about labor beforehand.

The most comfortable position for me during labor was on

  • DS was sunny side up. I had lots of back labour complete with vomiting. I ended up getting an epi which helped somewhat though the back labour was still there. That is until they topped me up so I felt nothing. I delivered vaginally with 40 mins of pus

  • Is that a hospital midwife or midwife at your OB's office? Because most stand alone midwives wouldn't say anything like that. The head can sometimes be turned in labor. All of my siblings were face up, my sister's first kid was delivered that way and m

  • Thank everyone, I will definitely try spinning babies, and Mrs E, I will check out what your midwife has to say as well.  Mine wasn't a stand alone MW, she was working out of my OB's office.  As scary as some of the stories can be, thanks for sh
  • Consider laboring and delivering on your hands and knees. Also try squatting. You don't want to be on your back (unless that feels good)

I had back labour with my first, and it was definitely excruciating! I don't think she was sunny-side up though. What helped me was having my mom ball her hand up into a fist, and push as hard as she could against the small of my back with it every time I
