Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

Toe Walking

My DD does this often. It's fairly recent. She can and does walk normally, but also toe walks. I wasn't concerned at all until a mom at a play date mentioned that it is linked to Autism. It would never occur to me that DD may be a autistic since she shows no signs of it otherwise. Still, just the mention of it is scary. Does anyone else have a toddler that does this? I'd rather not fall into a google hole and freak myself out. TIA.

Re: Toe Walking

  • My DS has an autism spectrum disorder and doesn't toe walk if it makes you feel better :) It takes many factors to get an autism diagnosis and if your DD has no other warning signs I wouldn't be concerned!

  • My DD tends to walk on her toes. She doesn't walk independently yet though. I have never heard of it being linked to Autism. I don't think it's true. I think it's entirely normal.

  • I have a niece who has done this for years.  She is now in 2nd grade and has just grown out of this.  I noticed my daughter (18 months) doing the same thing recently.  She can walk "normallY" as well and I see her walking like this more so
  • I wouldn't worry. My son toe walks here and there and has a couple other behaviors linked to autism. However, he is also the most talkative kid ever and shows affection so much. I worry too.  We all do. But try not to google! She's all good : )

  • My toddler doesn't do this, but my cousin closest in age to me growing up did this all.the.time. when we were little kids. He's 33 now and is in no way autistic.

I don't think you have anything to worry about. And stay away from google. : )

  • My daughter does this all the time and the pedi has never mentioned any concerns for autism.  Like the pp said, its probably just a phase.

  • If you look up the signs of autism, you'll see a billion things are associated. Yes, toe walking is one potential sign but only if in addition to other issues. By itself, occasional toe walking is normal toddler behavior.

  • Toe walking alone does not mean that your LO is autistic.  Your LO would have to show additional signs.  Toe walking is also a common phase.  DD went through it and she was evaluated for autism when she was evaluated for her articulation pr
