I'm home tonight, John is staying with Luke. I really need to get some sleep.
So last night Luke had become very lathargic, wouldn't eat (I was using
an eye dropper to get stuff in him) and then he threw up everything.
At that point we decided to take him to our local ER (only 5 minutes
away). I took him over while John stayed home with John. The one nurse
in the ER was down right rude to me (I'll explain later) so I called
John in tears and asked him to come over. Luke was given IV Fluids and
b/w was drawn. His sodium level was extremely high. Our pedi asked to
have him transferred to Jersey Shore Medical Center (a much better
hospital about 45 minutes away where the boys were born). I was glad
because at that point I had had it w/ that hospital. So Luke and I got
to ride in an ambulance (both our first time and hopefully our last).
He was admitted directly to the pediatric ICU (PICU) and the staff was
wonderful, not that I was surprised. They assessed him, he was already
perking up. He was given another bag of fluid (potassium chloride) and
this morning he started eating his formula; he had 2 oz at 6 am, and
then another 4 at 8:30, and then at 12 he had 4.5 and right before I
left at 4:30 he had 4.5 oz. The nurses and everyone is just
wonderful. He is getting back to his spunky old self, being silly,
shaking his head for no (he does that a lot) and playing with his pooh
bear. Of course when John showed up at about 3:30, I swear he knew he
was there, he woke up right as he walked in and flashed him a big
smile, he loves his daddy.
He's got all the nurses wrapped around his fingers and most of the
doctors...when they did the rounds the 5 nurses and docs surrounded his
crib...he was in heaven smiling at them all.
So he is definitely on the mend. His sodium level was over 160 last
night as of this evening it was down to 155 - it needs to be between
135 and 145. They want to lower it slowly, so it's progressing as it
should. He's pooping and more consistency to it, and peeing (including
all over the nurse after I left this evening haha!).
So if you've made it this far, I'll tell you about my experience in the ER.
So in case you don't remember: he saw his pedi on Saturday, Sunday we
took him to the ER and they sort of blew me off. Monday I spoke to my
pedi twice and we both felt like since he was eating he was getting
better. Tuesday morning he was eating good, but by the afternoon he
had just declined. By the time we got to ER at about 10:30 he was
extremely lathargic...I know he didn't look good, and maybe I should
have taken him sooner, but I can't blame myself or think about that now.
So one of the ER nurses (not even one of the nurses that was assigned
to him) came in and gave me a huge lecture how I should have brought
him in sooner and he obviously wasn't getting enough fluids - basically
I felt like treating me like some dumb white trash teenager who didn't
know how to take care of her kid. I didn't appreciate the lecture -
because at that point it really didn't matter. Second of all if all
you dumb b*tchy nurses would stop and listen to me you would know that
he was getting fluids and he was in your ER a day and a half earlier
and it was blown off because he peed once while there. I still feel
like the ER was to blame for just blowing it over a few days earlier,
but alas I guess I should have pushed harder. But needless to say the
woman was very rude to me and just being mean...when I called John
crying I was sure to express my frustrations loudly so they heard me.
When he brought John with him they all came to see his twin....and
magically after that they were extremely nice to me. My assumption
they saw how healthy and fat John was and realized I wasn't the dumb
trash parent that they were making assumptions about.
This
morning when my pedi came, I was afraid she was going to give me a
lecture and that would have been the last straw for her, but instead
she apologized, she feels like it is her fault, she also feels like
they should have at least taken blood on Sunday, but alas it's all
hindsight. And I told her about my ER experience and she was going to
file a complaint for me, she said that it will mean more coming from a
doctor, but I will also be writing something as well. So while I think
maybe our pedi could have done more, I should have taken him to see her
sooner. But we were in constant communication and he was drinking so
it seemed like he was improving. So rather than placing the blame
anywhere it's over. Although I'm happy to blame the ER especially
after how I was treated.
Ok if you got through all that...I appreciate it!

Re: Update on Luke..very long
I'm glad he is feeling better! That had to be a scary time!
Sorry about the stupid nurse. We're not all like that!
Keep us updated!
Oh my gosh, what an ordeal!
I'm glad he's feeling better though. Get well soon Luke!
No parent, even a dumb white trash one, should have to deal with a lecture like that with a sick child. I'm so sorry that you had to go through that, but I'm glad that Luke is feeling better and is acting spunky again.
Oh how scary !!! I'm glad to hear he is feeling better.
