Pacifier?

Who's baby uses a pacifier? If so, when did you start giving it to him? Are you breastfeeding, and did it cause any issues with that?

My little guy wasn't taking a pacifier, but clearly wanted to suck when he was fussy, so he was latched on to my boob A LOT. We just got him to take to a MAM paci, and now I am worried that he will have trouble latching for feeding, or that he won't be able to sleep without it, etc. It also makes me a little sad that we won't have as much nursing cuddle time if he can be soothed by the paci, not my boob.

Lots of silly FTM worries, eh?

ETA My little guy is 8 days old and has been a pretty darn good breastfeeder so far.

Re: Pacifier?

  • My DD took a pacifier the day she was born. She is EBF and never had any issues. Now at 10 weeks old she refuses any pacifier but she doesn't comfort nurse much now so it's not an issue. She took the paci from day 1 until about 8 weeks.

  • We started giving DD a pacifier at probably about a week old, because I couldn't tolerate her comfort sucking very much. She didn't really like it though, so we stopped trying it again until she was around a month old. She still didn't want to take it,

We gave DS one at just over a week old. He didn't have any confusion with BFing or the bottle we have to supplement with formula.

The NICU gave DS a soothie from day 1. He never had any issues switching back and forth though.

  • Same here! Took a paci the day he was born. DS is 11 weeks now and sometimes he will take one, other times he could care less.
  • DS took a MAM while in the hospital as he was comfort nursing on day 2. The MAM lasted all of 2 weeks then wanted nothing with any paci (great nurser, still EBF and takes Tommee Tippee bottles well). At 2 months until now will occasionally take a Dr Br

  • She had a pacifier once in the hospital, I tried a few times after but she wasn't very interested until she was about 9 weeks old. DD doesn't open her mouth wide enough now, she's getting plenty of milk but it hurts and I have to constantly relatch her.
